a. Give the empirical formula of this carbohydrate.

b. Write the balanced equation for the combustion of arabinose.
c. What volume of oxygen will be required to combust 10.0 g of arabinose at STP?
d. What is the volume of 8.00 mol of carbon dioxide gas produced at 0.90 atm and
35oC?
e. How many grams of H2O are produced from 35 L of O2 at 97.3 kPa and 21oC?
f. Draw a reaction co-ordinate diagram** for the arabinose combustion reaction.
g. Indicate the following on your reaction coordinate diagram: reactants,
products, activation energy (Ea), heat of reaction (∆ H).
h. What is the sign of ∆S for the combustion reaction? Explain.
i. Would this reaction be spontaneous? Yes, no, or maybe? Use ΔH ΔS to justify
your answer.
j. Arabinose combustion is a redox reaction. Which substance is oxidized?
Which substance is reduced?

4. Sort Out the Substances

An absent-minded student prepared five different solutions and placed them in five
flasks numbered 1 through 5, but forgot to label the flasks.

The prepared solutions are 0.5 M aqueous potassium chloride, 1 M sulfuric acid,
1 M acetic acid, 1 M aqueous sodium sulfate, and 1 M aqueous sodium hydroxide.

After some experiments, we found the following information:

• Flask 3 contains a solution with a pH higher than 4.9.
• If H2SO4 is added to the solution in flask 4, the product is the same as that present in
flask 2.
• In flask 5, there is not an organic compound.
With these data, indicate the name and chemical formula of the solution contained in
each flask.
