NEITHER / EITHER / BOTH

* BOTH = AMBOS / LOS DOS

* NEITHER = NINGUNO DE LOS DOS / NI UNO NI OTRO ( = NOT + EITHER)

* EITHER = UNO DE LOS DOS / UNO U OTRO

Examples:

 Mary has two children. Both are married. ( Mary tiene 2 niños. Ambos/

Los dos están casados)

 Would you like tea or coffee? ( ¿Te gustaría te o cafe?)

_ Either. I dont mind. (Lo uno o lo otro. No me importa)

_ I don’t want either. ( Ninguno de los dos)

_ Neither. ( Ninguno de los dos)

 BOTH / NEITHER / EITHER pueden llevar detrás un sustantivo.

 BOTH + PLURAL = Both windows / books / children / ... etc

 EITHER
+ SINGULAR = Either/Neither window / book / child /...
 NEITHER

 Si el sustantivo va precedido de THE / THESE / MY ... etc se dice

BOTH OF... / EITHER OF... / NEITHER OF...

BOTH THE...

EITHER OF THESE / THOSE ...

NEITHER MY / YOUR / ANN’S ....

Examples:

 Neither of my parents is English. ( Ni mi padre ni mi madre son ingleses)

 I haven’t read either of these books. ( No he leído ninguno de estos (dos)

libros)

 Se puede decir:

BOTH (OF) THE ...

BOTH (OF) THOSE ... “CON” O “SIN” OF

BOTH (OF) MY ...

Examples:

 I like both of those pictures.

 I like both those pictures.

( Both of them are right)

 Con los pronombres personales se usa “of”. ( Both of them, neither of us, etc)

Examples:

 Ann has got two sisters. Both of them are married. ( Ana tiene dos

hermanas. Las dos están casadas)

 Tom and I didn’t eat anything. Neither of us was hungry. ( Tom y yo no

comimos nada. Ninguno de los dos tenía hambre)

 Who are those people?. I don’t know either of them. ( ¿Quienes son esa

gente?. No conozco a ninguno de los dos)

 Tu puedes decir:

 BOTH ... AND

Examples:

 Both Ann and Tom were late. ( Los dos llegaron tarde)

 I was both tired and hungry when I arrived home. ( Yo estaba

tanto cansado como hambriento cuando llegué a casa)

 NEITHER ... NOR → ( NI ... NI ). Se utiliza con formas

verbales afirmativas.

Examples:

 Neither Liz nor Robin came to the party. ( Ni Liz ni Robin

vinieron a la fiesta)

 She said she would contact me but she neither wrote nor phoned.

( Ella dijo que ella contactaría conmigo pero ni escribió ni telefoneo)

 EITHER ... OR → ( O ... O ). Utiliza formas verbales

negativas (ni ... ni ) o afirmativas ( o ...o )

Examples:

 I’m not sure where he’s from. He’s either Spanish or Italian. ( Yo

no estoy seguro de donde es él. Él o es español o es italiano)

 Either you apologise or I’ll never speak to you again. ( O te

disculpas o no te hablaré nunca más)

 Detrás de NEITHER OF ... y NEITHER ... NOR se puede usar un

verbo en singular o en plural.

Example:

 Neither of them has / have other interests. ( Ninguno de ellos

tiene otros intereses)

 Detrás de NEITHER + NOUN va siempre seguido por un verbo en

singular.

Example:

 Neither child reads very much. ( Ninguno de los niños lee mucho)

 Nosotros podemos usar BOTH / NEITHER / EITHER solos, sin

ningún nombre, pronombre, adjetivo,...

Examples:

 The store has two lifts, and both are out of order. ( La tienda tiene

dos ascensores y ambos están fuera de servicio)

 The store has two lifts, and neither is working. ( La tienda tiene

dos ascensores y ninguno funciona)

COMPARA: EITHER / NEITHER / BOTH (TWO THINGS) Y

ANY (alguna) / NONE (ninguna) / ALL (todos) (MORE THAN TWO

THINGS)

Examples:

 There are two good hotels in the town. You can stay at either of them.

( Hay dos buenos hoteles en el pueblo. Tu puedes quedarte en uno de ellos)

 There are many good hotels in the town. You can stay at any of them. (

Hay algunos buenos hoteles en el pueblo. Tu puedes quedarte en cualquiera

de ellos)

 We tried two hotels. Neither of them had any rooms. Both of them were

full. ( Nosotros lo intentamos en dos hoteles. Ninguno de ellos tenía

ninguna habitación. Ambos (los dos) estaban llenos)

 We tried a lot of hotels. None of them had any rooms. All of them were

full. ( Nosotros lo intentamos en muchos hoteles. Ninguno de ellos tenía

ninguna habitación. Todos estaban llenos)
