Math Portfolio Problem Lab Write-Up


Please use this outline to complete the write-up for your portfolio problem.

I. Objective
A. State the problem.
1. Please paraphrase, do not copy it word-for-word. Explain what you are being
asked to figure out.
II. Hypothesis
A. Make an estimate or prediction of what you think the answer will be.
B. Include a range of your low and high estimate.

III. Concepts & Formulas


A. Describe the mathematical concepts and terms you will be dealing with when solving
this problem.
B. What are some formulas that may apply to this problem? Explain what the formulas
mean and how they connect to the problem.
IV. Procedure
A. Model
1. Draw the mathematical models (picture/diagrams) that show what you know
about the problem.
B. Plan out a method to solve the problem, and explain the steps you follow as you solve
the problem.
C. Plan out a totally different way to solve the problem, and explain the steps you follow as
you solve the problem.
V. Observations
A. Document your observations, data, calculation, and thinking as you solve the problem.

VI. Analysis
A. Analyze your data, models and calculations. What patterns, rules, and formulas can you
find?

VII. Solution
A. What is the solution to the problem? Be sure to answer all parts of the problem. Include
units and necessary descriptions.
VIII. Evaluation
A. Is your answer reasonable? If so, then why? If not, explain why it is not reasonable
determine what went wrong and check your answer by reviewing the steps. ​DO NOT
ERASE ERRORS!!!​ Repeat the steps and document them. Be sure that it is clear to your
reader which work you have discovered to be incorrect.
B. How accurate was your hypothesis?
C. Generalize your findings from your analysis so that they can be used in similar
situations.
