Simultaneous Linear Equations in Two Variables

Solve each of the following simultaneous linear

equations using the substitution method

2x + y = 4
y+ 4x = 12
2x + y = 4 eq. 1
y + 4x = 12 eq. 2
From eq. 1
2x + y = 4 ……….eq.1

y = 4 – 2x eq. 3
Substitute eq.3 into eq.2

y + 4x = 12 ………….eq.2

( 4 – 2x ) + 4x = 12
- 2x + 4x = 12 - 4
2x = 8
x=8
2
x=4
2x + y = 4 eq. 1
y + 4x = 12 eq. 2

Substitute x = 4 in equation (1)

When x = 4

2x + y = 4

2(4) + y = 4

8+y=4

y=4-8

y=-4
3x + 2y = 2 eq. 1
y + 3x = 7 eq. 2
From eq. 2
y + 3x = 7 ……….eq.2

y = 7 – 3x eq. 3
Substitute eq.3 into eq.1

3x + 2y = 2 ………….eq.1

3x + 2 (7- 3x) = 2
3x + 14 - 6x = 2
14 – 2 = 6x – 3x
12 = 3x
12 = x
3 4=x
3x + 2y = 2 eq. 1
y + 3x = 7 eq. 2

Substitute x = 4 in equation (2)

When x = 4

y + 3x = 7

y + 3(4) = 7

y + 12 = 7

y = 7 - 12

y=-5
4x – 3y = 12 eq. 1
3y = 5x - 9 eq. 2
From eq. 2
3y = 5x – 9 ……….eq.2

y = 5x – 9 eq. 3
3
Substitute eq.3 into eq.1

4x – 3y = 12 ………….eq.1

4x - 3 (5x – 9) = 12 3 (5x – 9)
3 3
4x – (5x -9) = 12
4x – 5x + 9 = 12 = (5x – 9 )

-x + 9 = 12
9 - 12 =x -3 =x
4x – 3y = 12 eq. 1
3y = 5x - 9 eq. 2

Substitute x = - 3 in equation (1)

When x = - 3

4x – 3y = 12

4(- 3) – 3y = 12

-12 – 3y = 12

- 12 – 12 = 3y

-24 = 3y
-8=y
-24 = y

Simultaneous Linear Equations in Two Variables

Solve the following simultaneous linear equation

by elimination.

4x + 4y = 3
4y – 8x = 3
4x + 4y = 3 eq. 1
4y – 8x = 3 (eq. 2)
(eq. 1) 4x + 4y = 3
4y + 4x = 3

(eq.1) – (eq.2)

4y + 4x = 3 ………….(eq.1)
_
4y – 8x = 3 ………….(eq.2)

0 + 12x = 0 4x – ( -8x)
x=0
= 4x + 8x
= 12x
4x + 4y = 3 eq. 1
4y – 8x = 3 eq. 2

Substitute x = 0 in equation (1)

When x = 0

4x + 4y = 3

4(0) + 4y = 3

0 + 4y = 3

y = 3
4

y = 0.75
5x – 2y = 10 eq. 1
4x – 3y = 1 (eq. 2)
(eq. 1) X 4 20x – 8y = 40 ………….(eq.3)
_
(eq.2) X 5 20x – 15y = 5 …………..( eq.4)

(eq.3) – (eq.4) 0 + 7y = 35

y = 35
7
y=5
- 8y – (-15y)
= - 8y + 15y
= 7y
5x – 2y = 10 eq. 1
4x – 3y = 1 eq. 2

Substitute y = 5 in equation (1)

When y = 5

5x – 2y = 10

5x – 2( 5) = 10

5x – 10 = 10

5x = 10 + 10
5x = 20
x = 20 x=4
5
3x + 4y = 2 eq. 1
3y + x = - 1 (eq. 2)
(eq. 2) X 3 9y + 3x = - 3 ………….(eq.3)
_
4y + 3x = 2 …………..( eq.1)

(eq.3) – (eq.1) 5y =-5

y = -5
5
y=-1
- 3 – 2 = -5
3x + 4y = 2 eq. 1
3y + x = - 1 eq. 2

Substitute y = -1 in equation (1)

When y = - 1

3x + 4y = 2

3x + 4(-1 ) = 2

3x - 4 = 2

3x = 2 + 4
3x = 6
x = 6 x=2
