1.6 Regeneration
There are several regeneration types:
• back-to-back
• unidirectional
• single module regeneration
• dual module regeneration)
• bidirectional
• network-to-network interface (N-N)
• network-to-client interface (N-C))
The regeneration types transmit optical to electrical signals at the same
bit rate, regenerate them electrically, and then convert the electrical sig-
nals back to optical signals of the same modulation and bit rate. This is
done on a per channel basis for CWDM as well as for DWDM.
1.6.1 3R Regenerator
All regeneration types feature the 3R regenerator, which regenerates the
bits in the data stream and stands for re-amplifying, re-timing and re-
shaping.
1.7 Loopbacks
When a link does not work as it should, the best way to investigate the
fault is to perform loopback tests. In complex systems it is often difficult
to determine the point of failure. Different loopback settings allow you
to isolate failed components or fiber connections and test them separate-
ly. It is also possible to test a complete fiber link at one time.
A loopback is a channel connection with only one endpoint. Therefore,
the channel itself immediately receives any signal transmitted through
that channel. This function can be used to test each segment of the op-
tical link within the system.
External loopbacks, using patch cables, is one method for investigating
faults. Another method is using internal loops.
External loopbacks and internal loopbacks can be performed in unprotect-
ed and protected optical links. In a system with protected links, set loop-
backs on the protection path to prevent service interruption on the
working path. Always begin loopback tests on the Customer Premises
Equipment (CPE) with client port loopback tests. Then proceed on to
loopback tests that involve other selected portions of the link.
protocol layer.
For SDH/SONET, the J0 trace byte may contain a whole message, or suc-
cessive bytes may be concatenated to contain a longer message. The sup-
ported message lengths in FSP 3000R7 are:
• 1 byte. The 1 byte shall contain one of the codes 0-255.
• 16 byte frame. The first byte in this frame should consist of a CRC-7
calculation over the previous frame, and the following 15 bytes
transport T.50 characters.
• 64 byte frame. In the 64 byte frame the last two bytes are carriage
return (0x0d) and a line feed (0x0a). This particular combination of
values must not be used in other places in the message.
For OTN, the trace compare process in the FSP 3000R7 is based only on
the SAPI, as FSP 3000R7 connections are Point-to-Point connections only.
The message shall be contained in a 64 byte string. The first byte is fixed
to all 0’s. The next 15 bytes contain the Source Access Point Identifier
(SAPI). The 16th byte is fixed to all 0’s. The next 15 bytes contain the
Destination Access Point Identifier (DAPI). The last 32 bytes are operator
specific. The length and format for the trace string is the same for all lay-
ers in OTN. The SAPI and DAPI may consist of a 3 byte country code and
a 12 byte National Segment code.

2.1 Rack
The 1HU Shelf and the 7HU Shelf (in the following referred to as shelf)
can be placed in a 19-inch, ETSI or NEBS compliant rack by using the ap-
propriate adaptor brackets. They also fit into a 300 mm (0.984 ft.) deep
ETSI rack.
For instance in Figure 2-2, p. 2-2 is shown a rack with a configuration of
7HU Shelves. The first shelf in the rack is the master shelf, but it is not
mandatory. Depending on the configuration, the master shelf can also be
on another position in the rack. A network element (NE) can be extended
from a single rack to a multi-rack system with no more than 20 shelves.
The maximum system configuration for Shelves comprises:
• 1 x master shelf (equipped with an NCU and SCU)
• 19 x main shelves (equipped with SCU only)
Separate adaptor brackets are available for mounting a shelf at the rack:
• 2 x 19-inch rackmount brackets
• 2 x 21-inch ETSI brackets
• 2 x 23-inch NEBS brackets

access and enterprise modules.
• Core type channel modules support digital performance monitoring
and are fully compliant with G.709/OTH-features.
• Access type channel modules are cost-optimized and support optical
layer performance monitoring functionality.
• Enterprise type channel modules are cost-optimized modules
intended to be used in enterprise networks.
Core type TDM channel modules are named xTCC whereas the access type
modules are named xTCA and the enterprise type are named xTCE.
Core type WDM channel modules are named xWCC whereas the access type
modules are named xWCA and the enterprise type are named xWCE.
All TDM and WDM channel modules offer network and client side ports on
the same module and are bidirectional modules with both Tx and Rx ports.
All modules are available in CWDM and DWDM versions.
The supported wavelengths of each module is determined by a fix, tun-
able or pluggable client and network port.
The use of pluggables is indicated by the abbreviation PC (for pluggable
client port) or PCN (for pluggable client and network port) in the module
name. Pluggable network ports are designed to support protection on the
same module when both network ports are fitted with SFPs (optional only
1 network port is fitted with an SFP if protection is not desired).
The pluggable port design at the client ports and the network ports en-
ables the applications within the same module as shown in Figure 2-6, p.

2.3.1.4 4TCC-PCTN-2G7+10G-V#D01-32
The 4TCC-PCTN-2G7+10G-V#D01-32 is a 4-port time division multiplexing
channel module with pluggable client interfaces that performs electrical
multiplexing and demultiplexing of up to four client interface signals
onto one wavelength.
The client interfaces support STM-16/OC-48 and are multiplexed accord-
ing to OTN as described in ITU-T G.709 using transparent asynchronous
aggregation of ODU1 tributaries into OTU2. STM-16/OC-48 client interface
signals at 2.488 Gbit/s are either transported transparently or regenerat-
ed at the RS/Section layer. The client interface signals are end-to-end
clock transparent and can be used for clock distribution, but holdover is
not supported. If demultiplexing fails, a local 20 ppm oscillator will be
used as clock source.
The network interface supports OTU2 with standard FEC at 10.709 Gbit/s
or OTU2V with enhanced FEC at 11.003 Gbit/s. The network interface is
fully tunable in the C-band and can be tuned to any channel from #D01
to #D32 including #DC1 to #DC9. Each client and network interface sup-

2.3.1.5 4TCC-PC-2G7+10G-V
The 4TCC-PC-2G7+10G-V is a 10 Gbit/s core type TDM channel module.
It is a channel module with four pluggable client interfaces and one net-
work interface, which multiplexes and demultiplexes the signal of up to
four client interfaces signals onto one wavelength. The client interfaces
support STM-16/OC-48, and are multiplexed in compliance with OTN as
described in ITU-T G.709. The interfaces use transparent asynchronous
aggregation of ODU-1 tributaries into OTU-2. The STM-16/OC-48 client in-
terface signals at 2.488 Gbit/s are either transported transparently or re-
generated at the regenerator section/line layer. The client interface
signals are end-to-end clock transparent and can be used for clock distri-
bution. The network interface supports OTU-2 with standard FEC at 10.709
Gbit/s or OTU-2V with enhanced FEC at 11.003 Gbit/s. Each client and
network interface supports one in-band management channel (DCN).

2.3.2.2 8TCA-PC-2G1+10G-V
The 8TCA-PC-2G1+10G-V is a 10 Gbit/s access type TDM channel module
with 8 ports. The pluggable client ports electrically multiplex and demul-
tiplex the signals of up to eight client ports onto one wavelength. The
eight client ports are arranged in four groups of 2 channels each. It can
transport two signals per group. Therefore, up to eight GbE or FC signals
are transportable.
The module utilizes a two-stage multiplexing method. In the first stage
each group is mapped into a data stream with a constant bit rate of 2.488
Gbit/s. The second stage wraps these four data streams in four ODU-1 sig-
nals and multiplexes them to OTU-2.
The network port operates at a bit rate of 10.709 Gbit/s without FEC.

2.3.2.6 2TCA-PCN-1G3+2G5
The 2TCA-PCN-1G3+2G5 is an access type, 2-port multirate TDM channel
module. It features two client and two network Small Form-factor Plug-
gable (SFP) MSA compliant ports. The module is designed for transport of
2 x GbE or 2 x 1G FC at data rates of 1.2500 Gbit/s or 1.0625 Gbit/s over
a specific ITU-T compliant wavelength between the ingress and egress
node. It is possible to mix these services such as 1 x GbE and 1 x 1G FC.
The transmission of the client signals in transparent mode is supported.
At the network port a proprietary protocol runs with a data rate of
2.48832 Gbit/s. The module provides clock and data recovery and per-
forms 3R signal conditioning at any supported data rate by default. Along
with wavelength conversion, the 2TCA-PCN-1G3+2G5 enables the imple-
mentation of media conversion (e.g. multimode to single-mode or copper
to fiber). Due to its dual network port, the module can be used to create
channel protection, and be used for building ring configurations. The
module is configurable for up to 80 DWDM channels on the 100 GHz wave-
length grid or for up to 8 CWDM channels on the 20 nm wavelength grid.
The 2TCA-PCN-1G3+2G5 provides performance monitoring on the optical
layer only. Internal loop backs or external loop backs are supported on
both the client ports and on the network ports. Each port can be looped
back individually. The 2TCA-PCN-1G3+2G5 supports proprietary ECC func-
tionality via the network ports.

The Network Element Control Unit (NCU) allows to monitor and control
the complete Network Element (NE). The NCU provides physical access.
It is available with one USB and two ethernet ports.
A maximum of 20 main shelves can be connected to build one Network
Element. The master shelf of each network element contains one Network
Element control Unit (NCU).
Every NE contains a single NCU. The NCU is placed in the upper slot of the
shelf and makes it the master shelf that should have shelf ID 1.

2.5.3 VSM
The Versatile Switch Module (VSM) is for optically switched protection
purposes. In the case of a network failure the VSM gets messages from
the 2OSCM-V#1630 to process protection switching. These commands are
transmitted via the backplane bus of the FSP 3000R7 system. Only in con-
figurations with 2OSCM-V#1630 the backup path can be monitored. The
VSM can work on a line, band, sub-band, group or channel basis. It can
be deployed in protected point-to-point topologies as well as in ring to-
pologies. It can be placed in any 5 HU FSP 3000R7 slot.

2.5.6 OSCM-V#1630
The Optical Supervisory Channel Module (OSCM-V#1630) with optical line
monitoring and optical port adds/drops a 1630 nm OSC signal and con-
verts it to/from electrical 10/100 Mbit/s ethernet signals. It has an inte-
grated ethernet switch with routing processor and three electrical 10/100
BaseT ports. Additionally, the module monitors the optical line for fiber
breaks and fluctuations of fiber attenuation.
Connections can be created to:
• Network Management Stations (NMS),
• other OSCMs connected to other network fibers
OSCMs, which are directly connected (optically or electrically) build an
ethernet LAN with a single broadcast domain. Two different protocols are
used for management:
• The IEEE 802.1w Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) evaluates the
non-optical ethernet connections while the optical connections are
regarded as shortcuts. It logically opens loops to form a tree
topology.
If a branch of this tree breaks, e.g. because a 100BaseT cable is
removed, RSTP re-evaluates the non-optical ethernet domain to
replace the broken branch by a redundant link.
• A Topology Detection Protocol (TDP) provides a fast protection and
loop removal mechanism over the optical ethernet LAN. The non-
optical links are regarded as being broken. The TDP will have priority
over the standard RSTP and removes loops in the optical LAN prior
to the RSTP mechanism.

compensation up to 10 dB loss without effecting the line budget.
The EDFA-L-D17-GC can be used as preamplifier, booster or inline ampli-
fier.

2.8.2 DCF-M/xxx/yyyy
The Dispersion Compensation Fiber Module (DCF-M/xxx/yyyy) is a man-
aged DCM module and can be placed in a SH7HU and SH1HU Shelf.
The DCF-M module does not exceed the attenuation of 10 dB.
Accumulated chromatic dispersion in the fiber is compensated for differ-
ent length of fiber span regardless of the wavelength (channel number).
02_ModuleOverview.fm
The DCF-M/xxx/yyyy module is not available with any other fiber type
than Standard Single-Mode Fiber (SSMF).
Variants The Standard Single-Mode Fiber of the DCF-M module is available with dif-
ferent fiber length to fully compensate:
• DCF-M/010/SSMF
• DCF-M/020/SSMF
• DCF-M/040/SSMF
• DCF-M/060/SSMF
• DCF-M/080/SSMF
• DCF-M/100/SSMF
2.8.3 DCG-M/xxx/SSMF
The Dispersion Compensation with Fiber-Bragg-Grating Module
(DCG-M/xxx/SSMF) supports channel modules with a line rate up to 11.3
Gbit/s and compensates C-band channels. It is a managed module which
must not be used on any other fiber type than SSMF according to G.652.
Variants The Standard Single-Mode Fiber of the DCG-M module is available with dif-
ferent fibers to fully compensate:
• DCG-M/060/SSMF
• DCG-M/100/SSMF
Due to its greater depth, the DCF1HU-P shelf has always to be mounted
in the lowest position in the case of cabinet mounting, that the air flow
