I. Purpose of the Course and Course Description: This course is
intended to improve language proficiency in each of the four basic
language skills, reading, and writing, speaking and listening. It is also
intended to increase understanding of both your own and other cultures
through the study of cultural practices throughout the Hispanic world.
II. Course Objectives By the end of Spanish 201 you should achieve
Intermediate-Low proficiency in each of the four language areas
according to the ACTFL guidelines. These abilities are as follows:
1. Speaking: You will be able to communicate at an intermediate level of
Spanish to talk about yourself and family members, ask and answer
questions and participate in simple conversations. You should be able
to talk about events in the past and present
2. Listening: You will be able to understand sentence-length
statements on a variety of topics, including basic personal background
and needs, social conventions and somewhat more complex tasks, such
as lodging, transportation, and shopping.
3. Reading: You will be able to interpret and discuss literature and film
at an intermediate level.
to read consistently simple, connected texts dealing with a variety of
basic and social needs. Examples may include short, straightforward
descriptions of persons, places, and things written for a wide audience.
4. Writing: You will be able to meet a number of practical writing
needs, which include short, simple letters and essays. Content involves
personal preferences, daily routine, everyday events, and other topics
grounded in personal experience. You will be able to write about both the
past and present.
5. Culture: You will be able to analyze a variety of high and low
Hispanic cultural texts and artifacts, including short literary texts, songs,
paintings and objects from daily life. You will be able to situate them in a
broader cultural context and compare them to expressions of your own
culture. Through these skills you will be able to better mediate cultural
difference and understand how value systems are shaped by language.

III. Topics
You will learn to communicate efficiently and correctly about the
following topics: Relaciones personales, la ciudad, medios de
comunicacion, la familia

workbook and lab manual assignments that correspond to the text assignments
for each lesson. You must complete all the exercises for each lesson.

Supersite: Supersite activities: Any assigned activities from the Supersite

(specifically the Practice and Assessment tabs, not including the WebSAM).
Supersite activities are to be done in preparation for the section taught in the

class and group discussions both by asking and by answering questions; it also
means that you will willingly engage in class activities and that you will always

every day and arrive on time. Absence from class will affect your grade, as will
