According to the article, the author suggests that: For the distribution of any
product, a balance must be found between the mode and means of transport so
that the product can arrive safely to the customer. He also explains that the
following must be taken into account when choosing the mode of transport:
- The budget, which should be the most important factor.
- That the mode of transport must be reliable and fast, depending on the product.
- That the guidelines must be complied with if it is hazardous material.
- That the merchandise must be secured mainly if it is a long journey, and take into
account the incoterms.
- The TIC must be taken into account to track the merchandise.
- That the merchandise must be properly packed to avoid breakdowns.
The correct mode of transport depends on the size and urgency of the product,
explaining the pros and cons against each of the means of transport.
- By road: It is cheap, flexible, not very ecological, it is subject to delays, it must
take into account height, weight and length.
- Railway: It is fast, ecological, it is inflexible, more expensive, it becomes viable if
the merchandise is heavy.
- Air: It is the fastest way, it is the most expensive and not very ecological, you
must take into account the weight and the dimension so as not to incur cost
overruns.
- Maritime: It is cheaper than air, it is slow and very inflexible, it is used to send
merchandise with large volumes.
- Courier: They are fast, safe, they can be more expensive, they handle
merchandise with little weight, it is profitable in short distances, and care must be
taken with the packaging.
