Lesson Reflective Summary

Lesson Topic: Habitats (2nd grade)

What went well (specific): The 5 E lesson went well. The students were introduced to a
phenomenon of sharks. I enjoy using the engage portion of this model because students are
interested in what the lesson will be. This lesson was integrated with reading a skit. The
students were competing for a character, so I split them in groups so that each student had an
opportunity to read the skit about habitats. After each group acted their skit, we all had a great
foundation on what habitats are specifically in our state.

Why was it effective (thoughts): The students understood the concept of habitats. Because
their teachers started with the standard on regions, it made the lesson easier in STEM to review
habitats and regions.

Why it wasn’t effective (thoughts): Students did not have time to journal what they learned
that day. I also introduced the concept of a CER – Claim Evidence and Reasoning. I compared
them to arguing

What was challenging (specifically): Having time for the students to journal their CER notes was
challenging. Explaining what CER is and how we use this method to communicate our
arguments was very challenging. I gave an example of their favorite super hero and they had to
argue why they were the best superhero. The students weren’t able to transfer that analogy to
the lesson.

Modifications to make it effective (specific): If I gave students time to work in groups to answer
the CER question in their journal, it could have made it more effective. A more clear explanation
of what CER is could also make it more effective.

Why the modifications will improve learning for all students (thoughts): Students who can
effectively explain their reasoning have a better understanding of the topic in the lesson.
