Lesson Topic: Magnetism (1st grade)

What went well (specific): I enjoyed the engage portion of this lesson because it made them
think about what topic we were discussing. I integrated reading The Magnetic Dog after
showing the levitating pencil with magnets. It was a nice book, however I’m not sure the
students understood the correlating idea with real magnets. The students loved experimenting
with magnets with the magnetic kite activity.

Why was it effective (thoughts): It was effective because the students remained engaged and
enjoyed experimenting with different types of magnets.

What was challenging (specifically): Keeping up with the magnets was challenging during this
investigation. Some students tried to take the magnets with them when class was over. The
students had a difficult time creating and cutting their own kites. They had to create a shape of
their own on an index card , color and cut it out. For 1st graders, some students still struggled
with fine motor skills and creativity.

Modifications to make it effective (specific): Pre made kites could have made it easier for some
students who struggled with fine motor skills. It would give students more time to use the
magnets and explore magnetism.

Why the modifications will improve learning for all students (thoughts): The students who have
pre made kites will have more time to explore magnets.
