Magnetism
Tuesday, November 29

Time:
This is a 40 Minute Lesson.

Objectives:
Students will be able to define magnetic domains.
Students will have an in-depth comprehension of the properties of magnets.
Students will be able to explain why some materials are magnetic while others are not.
Students will be able to explain why some materials are magnets and some are magnetic.

Materials:
HMH Science: DimensionsTM Forces, Motion & Fields Workbook.

Activities and Procedures:

Pretest: What causes something to be magnetic? (3 minutes)
Hook Video: (5 minutes)

Instruction: Students will follow along in their workbooks as the instructor leads with a
slideshow. (30 minutes)
- Once the instructor has arrived at the the appropriate spot in the slideshow, magnetite
and Neodymium magnet will be used to demonstrate.
Post test: same question as before (2 minutes)
Play with magnets until the bell rings
Evaluation/Assessment:

Although I had written a posttest into the lesson plan, I forgot to have the students
take it. To make up for this, we took the test during my following visit. The results of this
were very poorly defined. I fear that my question was too vague, and they were unsure of
how to answer it.
Despite the failure of the posttest, learning took place. I was able to evaluate this
by my call and response questions. This was also seen in the time that we spent handling
the magnets and magnetite. When asked why the magnets behaved a certain way, the
students were able to describe the magnetic domains. The two questions on my posttest
addressed the latter two learning objectives. Although most of the students did not answer
this correctly on the posttest, when asked in person they were able to give a correct
response.

Self Assessment:

I felt good about this lesson. A little less sure than the last one, however. Student
participation was significantly less, and I feel as though they weren’t as interested as they
were in my previous lessons. Considering this I do feel that I accomplished all that I set
out to. The students already had a good foundation of understanding for the subject
matter and my lesson was a piece of that puzzle that contributed to their understanding of
magnets. The posttest mishap was unfortunate but I don’t feel that it impacted learning.
