Narrative / Background Information: Lesson Plan - 5-E Model
Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:
-Are all magnets the same?
-Is the putty magical?
EXPLORE: Put the students into groups of four and let them play with the magnetic slime that is in the tins. In each of the tins with the
slime, there is a magnet. Tell the students that they need to find out all the things that the slime can do with the magnet. Allow for the
students to play for 4-5 minutes before asking if any of them had made it dance. This will peak a lot of their interests if this was not
something that had considered trying. Give a few more minutes before asking students to put the items back into the tin and return it to
you. Allow for the students to discuss what was happening while they were playing, ask what was something that surprised them to
happen.
EXPLAIN:Explain to students that this is a special type of putty that has a type of powder mixed into it, called ferric iron oxide, that has the
type of magnetism that also sticks to the magnet. Explain that the forces of magnetism around the magnet will want to pull the putty
around the magnet to be in the center.
ELABORATE: Share this video, Everything You Can (and Can't Do) with Magnetic Putty, show the students that with this magnetic putty, it
can do and withstand a lot of things. If internet is inaccessible, allow for students to spend more time allowing with putty.
For students wanting to do more learning at home, share this website, Magnetism Brain Pop
EVALUATE: Ask the students to write how the magnet becomes eaten by the putty works on a sticky note and stick it onto the board.
(Looking for students to say a variation of the force of magnetism by the magnet pulling the putty equally around it.
