Lesson Topic: Forces (4th grade)

What went well (specific): The students although in 4th grade always love a read aloud. I
integrated reading with Sheep In a Jeep. As I was reading they had to write down what forces
and motions they heard in the story. The ramps they created were quite creative and the
students worked well in their groups. I was impressed by their designs and how they
communicated on which ramp was the best idea to use for the investigation of force.

Why was it effective (thoughts): The students realized that the higher the ramp the faster and
farther the car traveled on the smooth surface. When they did the same investigation on
carpet, they noticed that it didn’t go as far as in the hallway.

Why it wasn’t effective (thoughts): We didn’t have much space to accommodate all the
students when carrying out the investigations.

What was challenging (specifically): Space was challenging for the upper grades to create their
ramps large enough to fit their designs. This gave the students an idea to modify their designs
to fit the space they had in the hallway and classroom.

Modifications to make it effective (specific): Giving students an assigned area to stay in with
their designs could have been modified. The cars were rolling into each other which made
measuring the distance of travel slightly challenging for the small groups.

Why the modifications will improve learning for all students (thoughts): Students who have
adequate space to demonstrate their investigations will have more valid results.
