Origin

This muscle extends from the spine of the second cervical vertebra (axis).

Insertion

The muscle becomes broader as it ascends to attach to the lateral part of the inferior nuchal line
of the occipital bone, deep to superior oblique and semispinalis capitis.

Rectus capitis posterior minor is visible in the triangular space between the two opposing rectus
capitis posterior major muscles.

Nerve Supply

The motor supply comes from the suboccipital nerve.

Vasculature

The arterial blood supply is derived from the vertebral and the occipital arteries.

Action

The muscle is involved in extension, lateral flexion and rotation of the head.
