TRANSPIRATION FACTOR TEMPERATURE

Problem Does temperature affect the rate of transpiration of a plant?

Statement
Objective To determine/ investigate/ study the effect of temperature on the rate of
transpiration of a balsam plant.

Variables 1. Manipulated variable

Temperature

2. Responding variable
1. The Time taken for the air bubble to move at a distance of 2 cm
2. The rate of transpiration

3. Fixed variable
1. Type of plant / balsam plant
2. Relative humidity
3. Air movement
4. High intensity

Hypothesis . The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of transpiration of a plant
Materials Apparatus : potometer, stopwatch, cutter,
and (A) beaker, meter ruler, basin , marker/thread
Apparatus
Materials : balsam plant , water, Vaseline/gris, dry cloth
(M)

Technique Measure and record the time taken for the air bubble to
move a distance of 2 cm by using a stopwatch
Procedure

non transparent
frame

1.The leafy shoot is selected from plant and cut off the shoot using a sharp
knife .
2.The cut end is immediately immersed in a beaker filled with distilled water

3.Then cut 1 cm of the bottom of the stem obliquely under the water.

4. The photometer is immersed in the water and moved around to remove all
the air bubbles. (The tap of the reservoir is turned on to fill the graduated
capillary tube with water).
5,Close the reservoir tap before the aparatus from the water so the graduated
capillary tube is full.
6.The potometer are sealed using vaseline to make
apparatus airtight and ensure no water leakage.
7.Mark two point at a distance 2 cm (using a marker/
thread).

8.Wipe the leaves and the apparatus dry by using a dry cloth

9. The non transparent frame is used to cover the leaf

Shoot and the photometer is placed in the shady place
at 300C.The temperature inside the frame is recorded.

10.The time taken for the air bubble to move a distance of

2 cm is recorded using stop watch.
11. Repeat the experiment using transparent frame to cover the leaf shoot
and photometer is placed at 330C. The temperature inside the frame is
recorded.
12. The time taken for the air bubble to move a distance
of 2 cm is recorded in a table.
13.Caculate the rate of transpiration by using the
formula = length (cm)
time s

Result Time taken for air bubble to Rate of

Conclusion The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of

transpiration (of a balsam plant). Hypothesis is accepted
