EXPERIMENT 3

NAME / TITLE Volcano

TOPIC Matter
LEARNING OBJECTIVE To investigate how different substances react when they are
mixed with each other.
KEY SCIENCE CONCEPTS / MAIN A Volcano is produced over thousands of years as heat a
MESSAGES pressure build up.
MATERIALS 1. A model of volcano
2. Baby food jar or similar size container
3. Red, yellow, orange food colouring
4. Vinegar
5. Liquid dish washing soap
6. Baking soda

WHAT TO DO ? 1. 1.Combine the vinegar, water, dish soap and 2 drops of food
coloring into the empty soda bottle.
2. 2.Use a spoon to mix the baking soda slurry until it is all a
liquid.
3. 3.Eruption time! … Pour the baking soda slurry into the soda
bottle quickly and step back.

WHAT HAPPENS ? When an acid and a base are mixed together, they react to
neutralize each other resulting in production of salt and also
in the process, produce carbon dioxide. In real volcanoes,
carbon dioxide is also present when they erupt.
SCIENCE EXPLANATION A chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda
creates a gas called carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is the
same type of gas used to make the carbonation in sodas.
What happens if you shake up a soda? The gas gets very
excited and tries to spread out. There is not enough room in
the bottle for the gas to spread out so it leaves through the
opening very quickly, causing an eruption.
