MELTING SNOWMAN

BAKING SODA EXPERIMENT

OBJECTIVE

To observe the reaction between baking soda and vinegar

LAB REPORT

Hypothesis: This is what I think will

happen when I mix baking soda and
vinegar

Observation: This is what happened

when I mixed
baking soda and vinegar

Conclusion: What did you find out?

HYPOTHESIS

• What will happen when I mix baking soda and vinegar?

• I think _________________________________________.

it will fizz it will erupt it will bubble

it will turn into a solid it will explode nothing will happen

MATERIALS

• Baking soda
• Vinegar
• Water
• Google eyes
• Glitter
• Orange paper triangles
• Paper cups and spoons
• Dish
HOW TO MAKE BAKING SODA SNOWMAN!

STEP 1: MIX BAKING SODA AND WATER

Add baking soda to a paper cup.

Pour in a little water and mix.
Keep adding water and mixing
until the baking soda turns
crumbly and moldable.
STEP: 2 ADD GLITTER

Add glitter to the baking soda.

STEP 3: FORM SNOMAN

Next, form the baking soda mix into snowman. Lay the snowman in
a dish. Add google eyes and an orange triangle for a nose. Sprinkle
with glitter.
STEP 4: SET OUT MATERIALS

Set out the snowman, vinegar and a dropper or spoon .

STEP 5: BEGIN
Add drops of vinegar
to the snowman.
Observe what happens and
talk about the reaction it causes!
STEP 6: CONTINUE

Continue to add vinegar

until the snowmen are
completely dissolved.
WHAT HAPPEN TO THE SNOWMAN?
• It’s a chemical reaction

• When a base and acid are mixed together - a gas called carbon dioxide is
formed

• Baking soda is the base

• Vinegar is the acid

• That’s all the bubbling and fizzing you can hear, see, smell and touch
NEW VOCABULARY WORDS TO INTRODUCE

• Chemistry: the scientific study of the structure of substances and of the way that they react with
other substances.

• Base: its lowest edge or part

• Acid: chemical substance, usually a liquid

• Carbon dioxide: a gas, it is produced by animals and people breathing out, and by chemical reac-
tion

• Gas: a substance like that is neither liquid nor solid and burns easily.
COMPLETE YOUR LAP REPORT !

It will explode

It was fizzy
Instead of melting, a chemical reaction
occurs between the baking soda and the
vinegar and it produces a new substance
called carbon dioxide gas. This happens
when a base (baking soda) and an acid
(vinegar)mix.
