LAVA LAMP

1.BACKGROUND RESEARCH
What is a Lava lamp learn about?
To understand the principle of density
and learn about colors

2.Hypothesis
The less dense object floats over the denser object. And the
carbon dioxide we see as air bubbles will push the colored
water from the bottom of the bottle up to the top surface. And
the bubbles burst, the paint drops fall to the density of the
mixture that is denser than oil, we can see that the beautiful
liquid in the bottle moves back and forth until the end of the
chemical reaction.

Experiment
Experiment 1 Experiment 1

There are four types of experiments with

different ingredients.
We will see which ones will last the longest.

Experiment 1 Experiment 2

- Glass bottle - Glass bottle

- food coloring - Vegetable oil
- oil - Baking Soda

- water - Vinegar
- Food coloring
- effervescent tablets
- 3 oz. plastic cup
Experiment 3 Experiment 4
- Glass bottle
- Water - Glass bottle
- Vegetable oil - Vegetable oil
- Detergent (Washing Powder) - Coke
- Lemonade (Lime) - Mentos
- Food coloring
Experiment 1
Processes
Pour about 1 inch of water into the bottle, then pour almost the full
amount of oil into the bottle. Followed by food coloring into the bottle.
Wait for the food coloring to settle to the bottom of the bottle. and then put
in the effervescent pill Observing the results of the experiment, it was
found that The effervescent tablets will push the food coloring up. floating
in oil like bubbling lava.

Summary of experiment
Why do we see colorful liquids in bottles moving around?
Because the effervescent tablets dissolve in water and produce carbon dioxide. What
we see is the air bubbles that cause the water mixed with the hooves of food coloring to
float from the bottom of the bottle as a drop of paint to the top until when it reaches
the top surface, the air bubble will burst, the colored water drop will fall down. With a
density greater than that of oil, we can see that the beautiful liquid in the bottle moves
back and forth until the effervescent pill's reaction is gone.
Experiment 2

Processes
Add 3-4 table spoons of baking soda into the glass bottle,
then fill the ¾ full with oil , Pour 1 cup of vinegar into the 3 oz.
plastic cup. Add 3-4 drops of food color, add 5-6 drops of
vinegar into the bottle. Watch what happens.

Summary of experiment
Why do we see colorful liquids in bottles moving around?
Oil and vinegar have different densities. Vinegar is denser than oil. That's why the
vinegar sinks to the bottom of the glass as it reaches the bottom. It will touch the
bicarbonate of soda. This causes a chemical reaction that releases bubbles of carbon
dioxide. Carbon dioxide bubbles cling to the vinegar and cause it to float to the surface
and fall to the bottom of the bottle. This allows us to see the food coloring move back
and forth until the chemical reaction is exhausted.
Experiment 3 z

Processes
Add 2-3 table spoons of Lemonade into the glass bottle, then fill the ¾
full with oil, pour 1 table spoons of Detergent into the 3 oz. plastic cup.
Add some water , Add 3- 4 drops of food color, mix together and then
pour it into the bottle.

Summary of experiment
Why do we see colorful liquids in bottles moving around?
Oil and lemonade have different densities. Lemonade is denser than oil.
That's why the lemonade sinks to the bottom of the glass as it reaches the
bottom. It will touch the sodium sulfonate of detergent This causes a
chemical reaction that releases bubbles of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide
bubbles cling to the lemonade and cause it to float to the surface and fall
to the bottom of the bottle. This allows us to see the food coloring move
back and forth until the chemical reaction is exhausted.
Experiment 4 z

Processes
Pour about 2 inch of coke into the bottle, then pour almost the
full amount of oil into the bottle. and then put mentos in the
bottle Observing the results of the experiment.

Why do we see colorful liquids in bottles moving around?

This is because the mentos dissolved in coke and produced carbon dioxide,
Carbon dioxide gas pushes the bubbles from the bottom of the bottle to float
as colored droplets upwards until when they reach the top surface, the bubbles
will burst, and will fall down with the density of the coke with more than oil,
we can saw that the beautiful liquid in the bottle moved back and forth until
the reaction of the mentos was exhausted.
