Latin Sensation is a blog created by college students that expresses the art of Brazilian dance,
specially the Lundu.

The Dances That Were Influenced by the Lundu

The Lundu dance has influenced some dances that have been known throughout the world, for
example, the famously known Samba. My group called the Latin Sensations decided to do our
essays on the sexual, seductive African dance called the Lundu. The first time I saw the Lundu
dance I fell in love with it. I saw it in class, when Professor Sco�퇁 showed a video of it to the
class on YouTube. When I saw the video the dance seemed so nice, sexy and the music just
made it be�퇁er. I wanted to try the dance out at the moment when I saw the video because that
is how good it was to me. I was not the only one who enjoyed that dance because many
students from the class were talking about it the next couple of days. This dance of Lundu
made me want to learn more about it. I wanted to know how it all started and how the origins
of Lundu started. I also wanted to learn how the dance of Lundu has influenced new dances. I
wanted to learn all of this information about this dance because it was probably my favorite
dance of them all. I remember seeing other dances showed to us by Professor Sco�퇁, but those
dances were not as interested as the Lundu was to me. I am going to explain and talk about the
Lundu and the dances that were influenced by the Lundu.

The Lundu dance was originated in Africa and it is believed that it was introduced in Brazil by
Bantu slaves from Angola and it surrounding areas. It was based on the batuques of the Bantu
slaves. The Lundu dance is performed by a man and a woman. The songs for Lundu also
originated from Africa. The Lundu can also be known as the Lundum in Brazil. The Lundu was
highly popular all over Brazil during the seventeenth and early‑eighteen century. But during
the eighteenth century the Lundu became famous as a salon dance. The Lundu was considered
a scandalous dance around that time because is a very sensual and pleasurable dance. I believe
that the Lundu can be considered a scandalous dance because when people see it they are not
used to seeing that kind of dance with those kinds of movements. Because of the physical

used to seeing that kind of dance with those kinds of movements. Because of the physical
freedom that the Lundu has, the Lundu has been regarded as lascivious. The two dances that
the Lundu influenced are the maxixe and the samba.

MAXIXE
The maxixe was the first danced based and influenced from the Lundu dance. The maxixe can
be described as the first genre of popular developed music of the modern age. The maxixe was
introduced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The maxixe can also be known as
the Brazilian tango. It is a dance accompanied with music that originated in the capital of
Brazil, the city known as Rio de Janeiro in 1868. At this time in 1868, tango was being
developed in the neighboring countries of Brazil in Argentina and Uruguay. There were a lot of
movements of dance during that time in Latin America. The maxixe was developed by black
people that were slaves of Chopi associations from Maxixe, Mozambique. In the early
twentieth century the maxixe dance travelled all over the world just like the tango did. It was
in Europe and in the United States and nations all over the globe. The music of the maxixe was
influenced by many forms of dance music. The maxixe also influenced other dances by
contributing to them. One was the samba and the other was the Lambada. In 1914, Vernon
Castle (h�퇁p://dic.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enwiki/1654328)the author of the book “Modern
Dancing” said that the “steps themselves are not difficult; on the contrary, they are childishly
simple; it is the easiest dance of all to do, and I think the hardest of all to do well”. So the
maxixe dance is a pre�퇁y hard dance to be well at it just like the dance of Lundu is.

SAMBA
Another dance that Lundu influenced a lot is the famously known Samba. Samba was
influenced plenty by the Lundu and the maxixe dances. The Samba began in Brazil, it is a style
of dance with many variations. Samba’s origins truly come from Africa just like it did for
Lundu. The samba is famously known as a dance that is performed as a street dance at the
annual carnival in Rio de Janeiro for over the past one hundred years. Many versions of this
dance have been performed at local carnivals in Rio de Janeiro as well. Today samba is very
popular dance especially in Brazil and throughout the world. People love to dance samba, and
they have been many “schools of samba” that help people teach how to dance samba, many of
who want to show off their dancing skills at the carnival. In France, many people enjoyed this
dance and in 1933 Paul Boucher (h�퇁p://www.dancelovers.com/samba_history.html) an author
wrote the first book that included Samba instructions. Samba’s rhythm is very different then
other dances because its rhythm is very specific. The rhythm is highlighted to the Brazilian
musical instruments; for example, instruments like the tamborim, reco‑reco, chocalho, and
cabaca. One of the most earliest and famous songs of the Samba was called the “Pelo Telefono”
which was composed by Donga. The principal characteristics of the Brazilian dance of Samba
are rapid steps taken on a quarter of a beat. It has a rocking motion and sway that can be seen
when the dancing couples dance. In today’s society the dance of Samba which in today’s world
might also be known as the Brazilian Wal䚶 is reasonably a ballroom dance that is very popular
throughout the world.

The Lundu dance was very influential and without the dance of Lundu the dances like samba,
maxixe would off never been established. And so many millions of people would have been
left out of great dance moves and music. Lundu is a great dance to dance, and I believe the
Lundu is one of the best dances that have ever been performed.
