opinion,  supply  reasons  that  support  the  opinion,  use  linking  words  (e.g.,  because,  and,  also)  to  connect

Describe  how  you  would  incorporate  an  Online  Project/Collaboration  Site/Publishing  Opportunity  in  your
classroom

I  will  read  two  read  aloud  books  that  differ  greatly  to  the  class  between  two  days  and  will  tell  the  students  to
take  notes  of  what  happens  in  each  story.  The  students  will  be  told  that  they  are  to  state  their  opinion  on
which  book  was  their  favorite  and  why.  They  are  going  to  write  an  opinion  piece  over  this  topic.

The  students  will  then  share  their  pieces  on  KidsPub  with  parent  consent.  The  students  are  to  review  other
students’  writing  pieces  as  well,  and  will  have  the  opportunity  to  give  solid  advice  for  improvement.  If  the
student  wishes,  they  can  enter  any  contests  on  the  website,  but  the  parents  must  know  and  assign  to  this
agreement.

What  technologies  would  be  required  to  implement  this  proposed  learning  activity  in  a  classroom?
Students  will  have  to  use  laptops  or  tablets  for  this  assignment.
Describe  how  the  following  features  are  addressed  in  this  learning  experience  (note:  all  of  them  may  not  be
addressed  in  the  project,  but  most  should  be  if  you  are  reaching  a  high  LoTi  Level).
a.   Collaboration  with  peers,  near-‐peers,  mentors  outside  their  classroom  and  often  beyond  their
school:  KidsPub  gives  students  the  opportunity  to  share  their  writing  pieces  with  others  online.

b.   Student-‐centered  learning  and  knowledge  creation  (creating  original  data  and  or  producing  original
products  as  a  result  of  engaging  in  a  project):    (type  here)

c.   Higher-‐order  thinking:  Students  are  creating  an  opinion  piece  that  is  based  off  of  their  own,  personal
opinion.  Therefore,  their  paper  will  use  higher-‐order  thinking  to  show  original  thought.

d.   Students  publishing  their  original  work  to  others  who  will  use/care  about  their  product:    (type  here)

Universal  Design  for  Learning  (UDL):

•   Supports  ELL  learners
•   Extends  content  to  home

Lesson  idea  implementation  and  Internet  Safety  Policies:

Both  parents  and  administration  will  be  aware  of  the  entire  process  of  using  KidsPub.  Parents  will  have  to  sign
a  consent  form  before  their  child  can  even  publish  their  writing  piece  onto  the  website.  Everything  will  be
monitored  by  the  teacher  throughout  the  entire  process.

Reflective  Practice:

The  students  will  learn  how  to  effectively  write  an  opinion  piece,  while  also  collaborating  with  other  students
on  their  writing  skills.  To  further  extend  the  activity,  students  could  make  a  Popplet  or  PowerPoint  over  their
opinion  and  present  it  to  the  class.
