3. DETERMINING DRAG FORCE:
The most critical case is that the wind force is prependicular to the surface of the object. Therefore, the drag force resulting from the wind speed can be calculated as below:
In which:
FD : Drag force 7.85 KN
CD: Drag coefficient 2.05
ρ: Flow density (Air) 1.225 Kg/m3 (At 101.325 kPa (abs) and 15°C, air has a density of approximately 1.225 kg/m3)
V: Wind speed 25 m/sec
A: Area exposed to the wind 10 m2 A= 20000 (the width of the gate) x 500 (the height of the skinplate out of the water)= 1.0E+07 mm
2
The resultant drag force is too low comparing with the water force when the gate is overflowed during the flood case; therefore, in the calculation this force is negligible.
The resultant drag force is negligible when it is compared with the hydro-statice force to be borne by the gate.
The drage force exerting to the gate is equal to the the last case explained above i.e. FD : 39.24 KN
Since the movement of the gate is restricted by the fixed parts protruding from the platform (refer to the general layout drawings), the gate neither rotate nor put abnormal force on the
other parts such as hydraulic cylinders. This force is similar to a case in which the gate is bearing just a nuiform water pressure of 0.08 m water column. This pressure is too less than 2
m water head against which the gate is design for the normal case. To sum up, there is no need to consider this force in the design.
