3-4 Honors English – Summer Reading

Students who will be in 3-4 Honors English course next year are expected to complete the
following assignments during the summer months:

1. How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster

a. Annotate (summarize main points of the chapter at the beginning of each
chapter, highlight, make notes in the margins, make connections, converse with
the author)

2. Read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn

a. Read the novel
b. Complete attached Data Sheet for the novel (4 pages). The purpose of the Data
Sheet is for you to create your own study guide for the novel. Each section is to
be approached analytically, not literally. For example, the section on setting
requires that you identify not only the physical location of the plot, but also the
atmosphere and significance of that location to the work as a whole. You may
attach additional sheets of paper to the Data Sheet if necessary, but try to stay
within the space provided. Write or type neatly and legibly.

Students should be prepared for an assessment that will be administered during the first week
of classes. Each of the works is available and should be easy to obtain through Amazon, Thrifty
Joes and other outlets. It’s also an option to read the novels online, although you would have to
pick a format that allows you to annotate.

Data Sheets are due the first week of the next school year.

We look forward to a great school year!
