SOCIAL VALUES OF SALAT

Introduction
The salat performed five times a day eradicates that forgetfulness and heedlessness, and
keeps the believer's will and awareness alive. It ensures that the believer constantly turns to
Allah and assists him in living in the light of our Lord's commandments. The believer who
stands in the presence of Allah in order to pray establishes a powerful spiritual bond with our
Lord. It is revealed in one verse that the salat reminds people of Allah and keeps them from
all forms of evil:
Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish salat. Salat
precludes indecency and wrongdoing. And remembrance of Allah is greater still.
Allah knows what you do. (Surat al-'Ankabut, 45)
Throughout history the prophets have communicated the salat made compulsory by Allah to
their respective peoples, and have been role models for all believers by abiding by this
observance in the best and most correct manner. Some verses on this subject read:
- For Prophet Ibrahim (as):
[Ibrahim said:] "My Lord! Make me and my descendants people who establish
salat. My Lord! Accept my prayer." (Surah Ibrahim, 40)
- For Prophet Isma'il (as):
Mention Isma'il in the Book. He was true to his promise and was a messenger and
a prophet. He used to command his people to do salat and give the alms and he
was pleasing to his Lord. (Surah Maryam, 54-55)
- For Prophet Musa (as):
I am Allah. There is no god but Me, so worship Me and establish salat to remember
Me. (Surah Ta Ha, 14)
- For Prophet Isa (as):
He said: "I am the servant of Allah, He has given me the Book and made me a
prophet. He has made me blessed wherever I am and directed me to do salat and
give the alms as long as I live." (Surah Maryam, 30-31)
- Maryam, depicted as a role model for all women, was also commanded to establish salat:
Maryam, obey your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow. (Surah al
'Imran, 43)
At what times has the salat been made obligatory?
In the Qur'an it is revealed that the times of the salat have been set out for believers as a
religious observance:

When you have finished salat remember Allah standing, sitting and lying on your
sides. When you are safe again do salat in the normal way. The salat is prescribed
for the believers at specific times. (Surat an-Nisa', 103)

The timings of the salat are "dawn," "noon," "afternoon," "evening," and "late evening." The
salat timings are clearly set out in several verses of the Qur'an. Some of these verses read:

So be steadfast in the face of what they say and glorify your Lord with praise
before the rising of the Sun and before its setting. And glorify Him during part of
the night and at both ends of the day, so that hopefully you will be pleased. (Surah
Ta Ha, 130)
So glory be to Allah when you start the night and when you greet the day. Praise
be to Him in the heavens and the Earth, in the afternoon and when you reach
midday. (Surat ar-Rum, 17-18)

MORAL VALUE OF SALAT

The establishment of Salah is one of the major topics upon which Quran has emphasized more than
anything else. In Quran Allah Almighty has stressed upon Muslims to learn to offer Salah regularly
and with mentions of offering Salah Allah has also mentioned its benefits with it as well. The lines
below give the major benefits of Salah that elaborate the importance of Salah.
Invoking Allah:
Although there is no constraint upon a Muslim on how to invoke Allah Almighty, however,
prayer is the preferred means of doing so as when a person worships Allah he or she
develops a connection with Allah and any invocation within that or after that connection is
bound to be accepted by Allah more compared to invocation done in any other circumstance.
In Quran, Allah Almighty says:
Therefore, a Muslim must use prayers as a means of invocation and ask Allah Almighty for help and
assistance in any difficulty or worry.
Leading To Taqwa:
Piety or righteousness is the prime objective which a Muslim has to achieve in this life. All
the instructions, constraints, freedom, rights and education provided by Islam are with the
objective that a Muslim becomes pious and moves on the righteous path. In this regard,
prayer has a great role to play as it promotes Taqwa or piety in the follower. In Quran, Allah
Almighty says:
“This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guidance for those who have Taqwa:
who believe in the unseen, and who establish Salah, and spend out of what we
have provided for them.” (2:2-3)
Therefore, in addition to giving charity and believing in the unseen, a Muslim must also
establish Salah in order to move towards Taqwa.
Reward In The Afterworld:
Every deed, whether good or bad that a Muslim undertakes in this life, he or she will have to
be answerable for it in the afterlife. Although all the deeds get rewarded in the afterlife,
however, the actual reward of Salah will truly be realized in the afterlife when Allah Almighty
will shower special blessings on that person. In Quran, Allah says:
Therefore, prayer is not something that ends in this world, rather the real reward of it will
come to surface in the afterlife.
Staying Connected With Allah:
Muslims who realize that Allah Almighty is their Lord and the Giver of everything, they try to
develop a relation with Him and wish to stay connected with Him as much as possible so
that their relation grows strong.
herefore, performing prayers is a means of developing a connection with Allah Almighty and
when a Muslim does so five times a day, then the consequent relationship is to naturally
grow strong.
Protection From Satan:
Satan is an open enemy of believers and all what he tries is to make people go stray from
the path of righteousness and go down in the path of oblivion and darkness. Satan tries to
tempt a person in all the possible ways and when a person once listens to him, he gradually
lures him or her down further into the pit of darkness.
Therefore, not offering prayer is actually falling into the prey of Satan, whereas those who
try to offer and establish prayer are actually resisting his temptation and when these
temptations are resisted for long the result is one not falling prey to Satan ever again on any
forefront.
Prevention From Lewdness:
In life, a Muslim gets exposed to all sorts of environments and people, all of which have a
direct impact on the personality of the person. There is no denying the fact that the current
plight of the people of the world is miserable where they are more prone towards ills and
lewdness compared to goodness, thus if a Muslim starts being like other people, he or she
goes down the road of darkness.

COMMERCIAL VALUE OF SALAT

Praying 5 times a day is really inconvenient
Salat is designed to span the entirety of your day. During my Islam month, I had to wake up
at 5 AM (not such a big deal) to pray, then I had to pray at 1 PM, 5 PM, 8:30 PM, and then
9:30 PM.

POLITICAL VAUE OF SALAT

Submission to God is incredibly appealing
I got a taste of this during my Catholic month, but there is something incredibly stirring
about submitting to something greater to yourself. Focusing on the self is frankly,
exhausting. However, when you adopt the mindset that you are serving the divine,
something noble and sacred, you become simultaneously humbled and excited.
I was once (and still am to an extent) a fan of the extreme Ayn Rand individualist
philosophy. What is exciting about her philosophy is that it glorifies the potential of man and
his ability to manifest his desires, his ability to create.
But this idea runs into a few problems when we encounter our own weaknesses, our flaws,
our inability to make ourselves happy. How can we be super humans if we suffer in so many
different ways?
Religion, particularly Islam, gets it right. It says that most of our problems come from
following our own desires and not God’s desires for us. The word Islam means “submission
to God’s will,” and Islam has very clear ideas of what it means to follow God’s will. Islam
doesn’t say to “lose 10 pounds in 30 day,” it says to fast once a year for 30 days and to
reflect on what it means to be hungry and how good you have it. Islam doesn’t say to build
a lifestyle business so you can travel whenever you want, it says to make the Hajj, the
pilgrimage to Mecca, once in your lifetime to remind yourself that this world is “an illusion of
sorts, and that we are merely travelers here, so we shouldn’t get too comfortable”
