ABSTRACT

This study aimed to know if there are possibilities for cement and glass mixture

to withstand fire. Precise data and informations are gathered by observing the

outcome of each experiments conducted by the researchers. Almost all of the

specimens that we're tested has a good outcome. One of this is specimen B that

showed good result in the experiment. It lasted several hours in the flammability test

and it also shows that it can withstand great force in durability test.
CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study:

Fire is one of the major calamities in the Philippines that affects a huge amount of

persons especially the poor ones. Almost all the fires in our country are caused by

houses that are made from light materials such as woods. Glasses are thrown after

being broke using it in another purpose after being broke can give a positive

environmental impact. The fish glue that is used to mix cement and glass are very

cheap as well as the cement.

Cement and glass both has high melting point that shows its potential to be used

on a fireproof product. The glue used to mix the product is proven to be not

flammable. The combination of these materials as a mixture provides a good quality

fireproof product.

Statement of the Problem:

This study aims to know if cement and glass are effective as a material in making

fireproof product.

This study sought to answer the following questions:

● Is it possible to use cement and glass to make a fireproof mixture?

● Does the cement and glass mixture are durable and firm enough to withstand

great force?

● Does the glue used to mix cement and glass has the right quality for the

fireproof mixture?
Hypothesis:

There is a possibility that the cement and glass can be used as a fireproof

mixture. There is also a possibility that the cement and glass mixture are durable

enough to withstand great force.

Significance of the Study:

The study wants to provide evidence that cement and glass are effective as a

fireproof mixture. The researchers think that recycling materials such as glass could

give help to our industry.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study focuses in making a fireproof mixture using cement and glass. The

study also focuses in using fish glue to mix cement and glass. The main concern of

this study is the effectiveness of cement and glass as a fireproof mixture.

Objectives:

The main objective of this study is to withstand fire using the cement and glass

mixture. Moreover, it aims to withstand great force.

Review of Related Literature:

Believe it or not, glass is made from liquid sand. You can make a glass by heating

ordinary sand (which is mostly made of silicon dioxide) until it melts and turns into

liquid. You won’t find that happening on your local beach: sand melts at the

incredibly high temperature of 1700°C (3090°F).

When molten sand cools, it doesn’t turn back into gritty yellow stuff you started out

with: it undergoes a complete transformation and gains an entirely different inner

structure. But it doesn’t matter how much you cool the sand, it never quite sets into a

solid. Instead, it becomes a kind of frozen liquid or what materials scientist refers to

as an amorphous solid. It’s like a cross between a solid and a liquid with some of the

crystalline order of a solid and some of the molecular randomness of a liquid.

The average house fire burns at a temperature of about a, 1,100°F, which isn’t hot

enough to destroy most metals and earthly-made substances. And if an item is well-

placed and small in size, its chances of survival increase drastically.

CHAPTER II: METHODOLOGY

Preparation of Materials

All the materials such as cement, pulverized glass, and fish glue were prepared.

Both cement and glass has a high melting point while fish glue has a heat resistant

quality. The fish is heated on a pot of water until it achieves a brownish color which

shows that the fish glue is ready. The glass is pulverized cautiously so that no

mistakes will happen.

Fireproof Mixture Preparation

The fish glue, cement and pulverized glass were mixed on a 3:2:1 ratio

consecutively. 1/2 of the mixture contains the fish glue because the cement and glass

won’t mix in a lesser amount of fish glue. 1/3 of the mixture is the cement because it

has a higher melting point than the glass. The glass is used to make the mixture more

firm and solid. The mixture dried after 1 to 2 days.

Testing the flammability of the fireproof mixture

The flammability of the mixture is tested by heating it for several times. Three

specimens were prepared for the test. The specimens are 1cm, 2cm and 3cm of the

mixture. Specimen which is 1 cm thick endured the fire for an hour while the other

specimen endured the fire for several hours.

Testing the Durability of the Fireproof mixture

The durability of the mixture is tested by using a dropping test. Three

specimens were prepared for the test. The specimens are 1cm, 2cm and 3cm of the

mixture. They tested the specimens at a height of 40 inches above the ground.

Specimens A and C which is the specimens 1cm and 3 cm broke into many pieces

while specimen B which is the specimen with 2cm size broke only into two pieces.
CHAPTER III: RESULTS, DISCUSSIONS AND ANALYSIS

This chapter illustrates complete and exact information that answers all the

questions the researcher’s sought. In this chapter, the researchers arranged the data

into organized presentation for easy comprehension.

The objectives are answered:

To determine which is the most effective amount of mixture to be use, this

particular measures are used.

● Specimen A- a mixture which is 1cm thick

● Specimen B- a mixture which is 2cm thick

● Specimen C- a mixture which is 3cm thick

The ability of the mixture to withstand fire is tested by heating each of the

specimens. Specimen A endured the fire for an hour. Specimen B and C can withstand

fire for several hours.

The durability of the mixture to withstand great force is tested by dropping it 40

inches above the ground. Specimen A and C broke into many pieces while specimen

B broke into two large pieces.

CHAPTER IV: FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The elaborated results of the previous chapter are illustrated in this chapter.

This chapter answers the main objectives of this study.

Findings:

With the results gathered in chapter 3, the given objectives are answered by the

following:

● The mixture can withstand fire for several hours.

● The study also found out that the mixture can withstand great force.

● The used glue to mix cement and glass are proven to have a good quality.

Conclusions:

With the results gathered from the experiment conduced, the researchers

therefore conclude:

 Specimen B has the right size and amount that can withstand great force and
fire.

 Each specimen is proven to be able to endure fire for a long time.

Recommendations:

Looking at the results, the study recommends to use
