MasterTop® Epoxy Flooring System

Cleaning and Maintenance Guide

General:
MasterTop® Epoxy flooring systems benefit from a regular, thorough maintenance program. All floors
tend to wear; becoming somewhat defaced by traffic. Regular removal of dirt from the surface will
prolong the life of the floor.

Temporary Protection:
MasterTop® Epoxy flooring systems typically require 7 or more days to fully cure and reach their
optimum wear and chemical resistance properties, depending upon curing conditions. During
this period, the surface should be protected by restricting traffic and / or covering the floor with
protective paper, or plywood. Be aware that some types of composite or Masonite boards can
leach a dye when wet. These materials are not recommended as floor protectors in wet
environments.

Refinishing:
Some owners prefer to refinish their MasterTop® Epoxy flooring systems if they become worn in heavy
traffic areas or when equipment is relocated in lieu of a regular maintenance program. This is simple
operation with most floors, involving surface preperation, plus additional finish coats to restore the
original new appearance. Contact your BASF Performance Flooring sales representative for detailed
information on refinishing. Periodic refinishing can, in some instances, be less expensive than a regular
maintenance program.

Precautions:
• Do not expose MasterTop® Epoxy flooring sytems to boiling water or steam.
• Always test a cleaning solution on a concealed portion of the floor.
• Always follow the cleaning solution manufacturer’s recommended dilution directions.
• Make sure any bristle brushes used are not too stiff, causing abrasion of the flooring surface.
• Certain sanitizing cleaners will contain corrosive chemicals. Consult the chemical resisance
chart or with a BASF Performance Flooring representative prior to use.

General Maintenance:
Frequency of maintenance depends upon the volume and type of traffic. Flooring systems with a
smooth surface are easier to mop and clean than flooring systems with a profiled slip resistance
surface. The following recommendations should be used as a guid in establishing an acceptable
maintenance program:

1. Frequently sweep or dust with a commercial sweeping compound.
2. When the flooring system requires mopping, wash the floor with warm water and free-rinshing, low
sudsing detergent, following detergent manufacturer’s directions.
a. Wet mop the solution onto the floor
b. Scrub to loosen the dirt
i. Power scrubbing is recommended for highly profiled, slip resistant floors. Be cautious
however that the bristles are not so stiff that they will abrade the floor.
ii. Smooth surface floors can usually be mopped clean with rag mops and wringer
systems.
iii. Profiled, slip resistant floors will require a scrubbing brush, such as a deck brush, or
a power sprayer to remove dirt from the profiled surface.
c. Flush off soiled wash water with squeegee or wet vacuum, and discard per detergent
manufacturer’s directions. This step is particularly critical for profiled slip resistant floors. Dirt
will redeposit on the floor if wash water is not removed.
d. Do not re-use soiled water.
3. Rinse thoroughly with clean, free running water, where area permits. Squeegee to drain or pick up
with wet/dry vacuum to remove all residual soil and detergent.

The variety of cleaning chemicals and bactericides available is extensive, and making the appropriate
selections can be confusing. The correct choice of chemicals is important and you are strongly advised
to seek a specialists advice. Some cleaners can affect the color, gloss or texture or your flooring
system. It is highly recommended to test each cleaner in a small area to better understand how the
cleaner performs and affects the flooring system.

In areas subject to spillage of foods, oils, fats, etc., schedule frequent and throrough cleanings. A
simple hot cleaning solution often puts the fat residue into suspension until the cleaner cools down, and
the fat re-solidifies, leaving a slippery film on the surface. As a preventative, use a free rinsing
detergent with plenty of water.

NOTE: A slip resistant finish is available for most MasterTop® Epoxy flooring systems. As the degree of
friction increases, however, the ease of cleaning decreases, which could necessitate a more extensive
cleaning regime.
