1. The head loss for flow of oil (kinematic viscosity, µ/ρ = 10−5 m2/s) through a galvanized
iron pipe (D= 100 mm, ε= 0.15 mm) is 60 m per km length. What is the flow rate?
2. What size of asphalted cast-iron pipe (ε= 0.12 mm) is required to carry water at a
discharge of 0.1 m3/s with a maximum head loss of 20 m per km?
3. Two reservoirs are 1000 m apart and the water surface elevation in the downstream
reservoir is 40 m higher than the upstream reservoir. These are connected through a
40 cm diameter asphalted cast iron pipe (ε= 0.12 mm) containing a pump and a fully
open gate valve. The “head gain” at the pump depends on the discharge and is given by
hp (in m) = 60 − 235 Q2 − 335 Q3 for Q = 0 to 0.4 m3/s. Find the discharge in the pipe.
4. Two pipes (ε= 0.1 mm) are connected in parallel between points A and B. Pipe 1 is
500 m long with a diameter of 50 cm and pipe 2 is 1000 m long with a diameter of
100 cm. If the total flow into A and out of B is 0.6 m3/s, compute the head loss between
A and B and discharge in each pipe.
