Practice Problems Set 3

1. A 2 m wide concrete lined rectangular channel is laid on a slope of 0.0005. Find the normal depth
for a discharge of 6 m3/s.

2. A trapezoidal channel (width = 5.0 m, side slope 1.5H:1V) has a bed slope of 0.0009. Find the
normal depth for a discharge of 15 m3/s, if the Manning's roughness coefficient is 0.015.

3. For a circular channel, obtain the depth of flow for maximum velocity using the Chezy equation.

4. A 0.5 m wide laboratory flume has a concrete bed (n=0.015) and glass sides (n=0.009) and is laid
at a slope of 0.0004. Find the discharge when the flow depth is 0.3 m.

5. The cross-section of a river (n = 0.01, S0 = 0.0001) can be idealised as consisting of a deep

rectangular channel (width = 10 m, bank height = 3 m) flanked by rectangular flood plains on
either side (width = 50 m each). Find the discharge when the flow depth is (a) 3 m, (b) 3.3 m, and
(c) 5 m.

6. A trapezoidal channel (n = 0.012) is to carry a discharge of 20 m3/s at a bed slope of 0.0004. Find
the most efficient section with a side-slope equal to 1.5H:1V.
