5.0 Responsibilities and Requirements

5.1 Manufacturing Engineering

Manufacturing Engineering creates the product traveler and ensures each traveler reflects the true
assembly process and data flow.

5.2 Manufacturing
Manufacturing ensures blank travelers or electronic stations are available at the point of use for
each manufactured product. Manufacturing also completes the traveler(s) during the product's
manufacturing process.

5.3 Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance maintains the Device History Record, of which the traveler is a part, after
manufacturing of the assembly. Completed, final assembly travelers require the signature of the
Quality Assurance Manager or authorized designee.

6.0 Procedure

6.1 Creating a Traveler Using the Traveler Template

6.1.1 Determining the Need to Create a Traveler

Manufacturing Engineering determines if a traveler is necessary for a particular product
(or its subassemblies). If a sub-assembly is serialized or if Quality Assurance has
overriding concerns of compliance, Manufacturing Engineering may deem it necessary to
create a traveler to record specific data not easily recorded on the final assembly traveler.

6.1.2 Creating the Traveler

Manufacturing Engineering creates a traveler specific to a particular assembly or
sub-assembly. Customize it to accommodate the processes and information to be
recorded. When creating a new traveler, use the most current form of the traveler
template available on the network. The template is designed as a two page form. The first
page includes the process steps for recording data and sign-off, and the second page is to
record rework or repair (reprocessing) information. If the assembly process does not have
an allowance for rework or repair, omit the second page. It is recommended, though not
required, that the traveler be limited to two pages. Page two (the rework or repair
information) may be printed or photocopied onto the back of page one, resulting in a
single sheet traveler.

In the top, right comer of the traveler is the document number and revision number of the
traveler, where XXXXX is the family number of the actual part. The part name also
appears in the top, right comer. Also include a space for the operator to record the lot
number or serial number, and the manufacturing order number of the individual assembly.

Basic column headings on the first page are predetermined and named, although column
widths are adjustable as needed to accommodate necessary information. The column
headings on page one are as follows:

6.1.2.1 Sequence Number (Seq No)

Use this space to differentiate one sign-off process from another, in the order
they are performed. The sequence number is not a routing for every step in the
manufacturing process. Only critical steps or groups of steps appear as
sequences on the traveler. One sequence number may include several
assembly steps if necessary.

6.1.2.2 Reference
Reference the manufacturing instruction, test procedure, inspection
instruction, or other document that governs a particular sequence. Each
sequence must have at least one reference. Include a space for the operator to
record the revision level of the reference document the first time it appears.
Subsequent references to the same document need not indicate the revision.

6.1.2.3 Operation
Describe the sequence requiring sign-off using key word or words.

6.1.2.4 Data
Provide space to record any required data for this sequence. The traveler
should prompt the operator for any specific information, such as the serial
number, lot number, test data, etc. If necessary, modify the column or cell to
accommodate the particular data requirements. If a sequence does not require
data records, leave it blank. An abundance of recorded data may warrant a

separate formatted data sheet. Data sheets are not a required attachment to the
traveler, but they should be kept in the Device History Record.

6.1.2.5 Date
Provide space for the operator to record the completion date of the sequence.

6.1.2.6 Initial
Provide space for the operator completing the sequence to record their initials.

6.1.2.7 Page Two of the Traveler

Section 6.3 Using the Traveler To Record Reprocessing, details the
information required for creating page two, or the backside, of the traveler
form.

6.1.3 Releasing / Revising the Traveler

Release the traveler as part of the official documentation package for the assembly or
subassembly for which it was created. If the item or process changes, it may be necessary
to update the traveler using the change control process (with an ECR/ECN) described in
Production Document Release and Change Control. If there is a requirement to add or
delete a sequence from the traveler, adjust the sequence numbers when possible. If
necessary, immediate changes in the traveler's recorded information requirements may be
hand written on travelers already in process. Manufacturing Engineering and Quality
Assurance initial hand written changes. Manufacturing Engineering then revises the
traveler through the ECR/ECN process described in Production Document Release and
Change Control.

6.2 Using the Traveler During Assembly

6.2.1 Operator Entries

Operators must obtain a blank traveler before manufacturing the subassembly or
assembly, and record the assembly's serial number and manufacturing order number
where applicable. During the assembly process, the operator is prompted to record all
pertinent information by the manufacturing instructions, as well as the key word or words
on the traveler. Operators should exercise care to initial the travelers accurately and
timely, and complete the traveler's required entries as they complete each sequence.

The operator records the revision of the reference document only the first time the
document's number appears on the traveler. If the same document is referenced elsewhere
on the traveler, assume it to be the same revision as previously recorded. When
performing operations resulting from an ICN, record the ICN number in the traveler's
reference column.

The operator records any required data, prompted or otherwise, in the space provided. If
there are no requirements to record data, the operator initials and dates the traveler at the
completion of the sequence as it appears on the traveler. Do not start the next sequence
until after completion and sign-off of the previous sequence.

If a failure occurs during the assembly process, refer to Section 6.3. Using the Traveler
To Record Reprocessing.

6.2.2 Filing the Traveler

Keep all travelers with the Device History Record after completion of the applicable
assembly process.

6.3 Using the Traveler To Record Reprocessing

6.3.1 Recording the Failure

If a failure occurs during or at the completion of the assembly process (prior to
shipment), the operator records the information in the appropriate columns on page two
or the reverse side of the traveler. The operator who discovers the problem enters the
following information:

6.3.1.1 Description of Problem

Describe the symptoms of the problem, including the assembly or
subassembly with the suspected failure.

6.3.1.2 Rejected By
The operator who rejected the assembly or subassembly enters their initials.

6.3.1.3 Date
The operator enters the date they discovered the failure. Quality Assurance
then dispositions the failed assembly or subassembly.

6.3.2 Recording the Reprocessing

On the traveler, the reprocessing operator records rework performed on an assembly or
subassembly including rework done while troubleshooting. Be as accurate and complete
as possible. If the operator reworks or repairs multiple items, record each item on the
traveler. The operator who reprocesses the assembly MUST complete the following:

6.3.2.1 Part(s) Replaced / Reworked

Provide a brief description or list of the part(s) replaced or reworked to correct
the failure. Indicate the item number of replaced parts. If the operator replaces
a part which turns out not to be the actual problem, still record it on the
traveler and indicate the component was not the problem.

6.3.2.2 Serial Number or Lot Number

If the replaced part is serialized, record the serial or lot number of the
replacing item. Cross out the serial or lot number on page one to indicate its
replacement.

6.3.2.3 Repair / Rework By

The operator performing the reprocessing enters their initials.

6.3.2.4 Date Done

The operator enters the date they completed the reprocessing.

6.4 Reprocessing Due to ECN or ICN

If a subassembly or assembly requires modification as a result of an ECN or ICN, the operator
must record this information on the traveler. The ECN / ICN must specify which items require
reprocessing.

6.4.1 ECN / ICN Entries on the Traveler

Complete the traveler for modifications resulting from an ECN or ICN as described in
Section 6.3, Using the Traveler To Record Reprocessing. Record the reason for the ECN /
ICN and a description of the modification.

6.4.2 ECN / ICN Number

Record the ECN or ICN number on each traveler as it is reprocessed.
