1.0 Purpose
This document defines the contents of and the procedures for creating and utilizing an assembly specific
traveler.
2.0 Scope
This procedure applies to all products manufactured by [Company Name], facilities.
3.1 Data
Any pertinent or critical information required for product history. Data may be recorded on a
traveler, a separate formatted sheet, or in an electronic file.
3.3 Operator
An individual trained in the fabrication, assembly, and/or testing of a manufactured product.
3.4 Product
Unless otherwise specified, the word "product" in this procedure is used in the more global sense
to refer to components, materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, processes, software, or
services.
3.5 Traveler
A document or electronic file that tracks an assembly (refers to an end assembly or a
subassembly), or lot of assemblies from the beginning of the manufacturing process until it is
shipped or placed into the next higher assembly. The traveler is used to ensure completion of
specific assembly steps, processes, and/or tests, and to record pertinent data or rework information
generated during manufacturing of the assembly.

5.2 Manufacturing
Manufacturing ensures blank travelers or electronic stations are available at the point of use for
each manufactured product. Manufacturing also completes the traveler(s) during the product's
manufacturing process.
6.0 Procedure
In the top, right comer of the traveler is the document number and revision number of the
traveler, where XXXXX is the family number of the actual part. The part name also
appears in the top, right comer. Also include a space for the operator to record the lot
number or serial number, and the manufacturing order number of the individual assembly.
Basic column headings on the first page are predetermined and named, although column
widths are adjustable as needed to accommodate necessary information. The column
headings on page one are as follows:
6.1.2.2 Reference
Reference the manufacturing instruction, test procedure, inspection
instruction, or other document that governs a particular sequence. Each
sequence must have at least one reference. Include a space for the operator to
record the revision level of the reference document the first time it appears.
Subsequent references to the same document need not indicate the revision.
6.1.2.3 Operation
Describe the sequence requiring sign-off using key word or words.
6.1.2.4 Data
Provide space to record any required data for this sequence. The traveler
should prompt the operator for any specific information, such as the serial
number, lot number, test data, etc. If necessary, modify the column or cell to
accommodate the particular data requirements. If a sequence does not require
data records, leave it blank. An abundance of recorded data may warrant a
separate formatted data sheet. Data sheets are not a required attachment to the
traveler, but they should be kept in the Device History Record.
6.1.2.5 Date
Provide space for the operator to record the completion date of the sequence.
6.1.2.6 Initial
Provide space for the operator completing the sequence to record their initials.
The operator records the revision of the reference document only the first time the
document's number appears on the traveler. If the same document is referenced elsewhere
on the traveler, assume it to be the same revision as previously recorded. When
performing operations resulting from an ICN, record the ICN number in the traveler's
reference column.
The operator records any required data, prompted or otherwise, in the space provided. If
there are no requirements to record data, the operator initials and dates the traveler at the
completion of the sequence as it appears on the traveler. Do not start the next sequence
until after completion and sign-off of the previous sequence.
If a failure occurs during the assembly process, refer to Section 6.3. Using the Traveler
To Record Reprocessing.
6.3.1.2 Rejected By
The operator who rejected the assembly or subassembly enters their initials.
6.3.1.3 Date
The operator enters the date they discovered the failure. Quality Assurance
then dispositions the failed assembly or subassembly.
