Sonata Form: not the entire composition- the form of a single movement within a composition
1) Exposition: 1st theme, home key-bridge-2nd key- closing section, repeat exposition
2) Development: unstable section, tension
3) Recapitulation
4) Coda: closing section, tonic key
Theme and Variation Form: theme- repeated over and over, changing each time; variation-
repetitions
-can be changed in various ways: rhythms, dynamics, tone colors, textures, harmonies
Minuet and Trio Form: three-part form, da capo form, ternary form, ABA form; minuet-trio-
repeat minuet
-stately dance, popular with aristocrats
-often used in 3rd movement of 4 movement compositions
Rondo Form: tuneful main theme, alternates with variety of other themes; ABACABA
