RELIEF DEVICE CALCULATION WORK EXECUTION PLAN

TASK DESCRIPTION

Define the protected system and understand the operation of the process. The protected process system may include
1 Identify and locate safety-relief device :
several pieces of equipment. Review the codes and standards requirements set for different types of equipment.

Establish pressure profile of the protected process system and evaluate scenarios that would lead to overpressure.
Overpressure is caused by an accumulation of material or heat (in excess of design or less than design) within a process
system. There are typically multiple scenarios that may cause overpressure. When evaluating scenarios, consider modes of
2 Evaluate relief scenario : operation other than normal operation, such as startup and shutdown and identify which scenarios are credible. Credibilty
is based on risk, which is a function of probability and consequence. Formal hazard-identification procedures, such as
layers of protection analysis (LOPA), hazard and operability (HAZOP) analysis, fault-tree analysis (FTA), or failure modes
and effects analysis (FMEA), can be used to assess risk.

Select appropiate type of relief device and routing of discharge(effluent). The most common type of relief device are
3 Select type of device :
conventional, balance bellows, pilot-operated, rupture, conservation vents, weighted manway cover.

Gather the data needed to determine the required relief flowrate and required relief area for the credible scenario. For
example (1) a control valve failure requires knowing the control valve flow coefficient and the upstream pressure (2) if
overpressure is cause by a centrifugal pump, then pump curve and size of the impeller are needed to calculate the
4 Acquire data / Run simulation :
flowrate.
Run simulation (if necessary) to get physical properties such as heat capacity, density, heat of vaporization, etc.
Do manual calculation (if necessary) for material balance rates and duties.

The mass discharged through the relief system is typically a vapor(gas or steam), liquid, or combination of both. Two
phase relief is common in reactive releif systems and systems with foamy or viscous materials , experts with specialized
5 Determine fluid phase and design basis :
knowledge should perform two-phase relief design.
It is important to identify the applicable codes/stardards/pratices that will be used as a basis to design the relief device.

Size the relief device and evaluate hydraulics for inlet and outlet lines. Using calculation spreadsheet and hydraulic
6 Design the relief device :
calculation software determine the required relief area and size.

Process Data Input on PSV Data Sheet &
7 : Input process data on relief valve data sheets and summary sheet.

Compilation of supporting documents/attachments. Design of relief systems is sensitive to operating conditions, flow
8 Documentation : rates, equipment size and configuration it is therefore essential to keep engineering records for ease of evaluaton
whenever there is a plan to change or modification of equipment/system/unit.
