1.1 INTRODUCTION

A winch is a mechanical device that is used to pull in (wind up) or let out (wind

out) or otherwise adjust the tension of a rope or wire rope (also called "cable" or "wire

cable"). In its simplest form, it consists of a spool and attached hand crank. In larger

forms, winches stand at the heart of machines as diverse as tow trucks, steam shovels

and elevators. The spool can also be called the winch drum. More elaborate designs

have gear assemblies and can be powered by electric, hydraulic, pneumatic or internal

combustion drives. Some may include a solenoid brake and/or a mechanical brake or

ratchet and pawl device that prevents it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

All winches have complex dynamics that include turning and rolling motions. We

are concerned here with the turning motions.

The goal of this project is to modify the winch’s system design to minimise the

force needed for the turning motion when the winch faces the following disturbances :

1. Bent drum of housing of rope (shaft)

2. Abnormal noise present (bearing)

3. Viewable cracks (gears)

4. Load that can be sustained is limited (gears and shaft)

1.3 LIST OF COMPONENTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

Function of gear

 trade motion for force

 long lever to lift a massive object

 reduce motion (rotation) and increased output force (torque)

Function of bearing

 constrains relative motion to only the desired motion

 reduces friction between moving parts

 prevent motion by controlling the vectors of normal forces that bear on the

moving parts

Function of shaft

 used to transmit power or motion

 provides the axis of rotation or oscillation of element

 used to support rotating gear

1.4 DESIGN OBJECTIVE

 To improve the gear so load incrementation would not affect force needed to

turn the handle.

 To improve the lifetime of the winch components.

 To produce a machine that has better mechanical components system that is

able to perform optimally.

1.5 IMPROVEMENTS

Expected outcome for gear

 Type and material of gears are changed to be more efficient.

 Increase the force of gear

 Force required to turn the gears will be reduced.

Expected outcome for shaft

 Material is changed to make it durable.

 Size of shaft is increased.

 Strength is increased.

Expected outcome for bearing

 Material is changed to a sturdier material.

 Reduce noise and vibration.

 Allow the drum to rotate more smoothly and efficintly,
