This document proposes a direct model predictive control strategy to control a bidirectional quasi-Z-source inverter driving a permanent magnet synchronous machine for electric vehicle applications. Existing methods use voltage source inverters with batteries and a dc-dc converter, which increases cost and complexity. The proposed method uses a model predictive control strategy to control both sides of the bidirectional quasi-Z-source inverter connected to a permanent magnet synchronous machine, regulating the machine currents and dc-side variables like capacitor voltage and inductor current. This control method allows control of the dc-link voltage over a wide speed range for electric vehicle applications.

Abstract: This paperpresents a d irect model predictive control(MPC) strateg y to control the bidirectional quasi-Z-sourceinv erter (BqZSI) driving a permanent magn et synchronous machine(PMSM) for electric v ehicle applications. The dqmachinecurrents are simultaneously controlled with the capacitor voltageand inductor current of the dc side. The physical model of theBqZSI with PMSM is first derived which encompasses differentoperating mo des and states of the BqZSI. Existing method: The existing method de scribesRegardless of the machine type, batteries are used as themain source. By using voltage source inverters (VSIs), the dccurrent is co nverted to ac in order to feed the EV machine. However, the dc-link voltage cannot be contr olled over awide speed range. To solve this probl em, the flux weakeningtechnique is utilized in high speed which results in lowerefficiency. To co ntrol the dc-link voltage, a dc-dc converteris c ombined with the VSI. Although the additional converterincreases the traction system efficiency, it also increases thecost and the controller compl exity Proposed method: The proposed method p roposes,an MPC strategy that controls bothsides of the BqZSI connected with a PMSM for EV applications. The main control variable on the machine side is themachine current, i.e. the d q currents should be regulated alongtheir reference values (computed from an outer contro l loop). In addition, the dc-side variables, namely the capacitor voltageand inductor current, should track their reference trajectoriesin order to adjust the dc-link voltage to a desired level overa wide speed range. Moreover, the switching frequency isto be controlled by penalizing the switching transitions. Block diagram of the prop osed method:

Drawbacks of existing met hod:
1. Although the additionall converter increases the traction system efficiency, it also increases the cost and the controller complexity. Advantages of proposed m ethod: 1. An MPC strategy that co ntrols both sides of the BqZSI connected with a PMSM for EV applications. Applications: Bidirectional quasi-Z-sourceinve rter (BqZSI) driving a permanent magnet synch ronous machine (PMSM) for electric vehicle applications.
