ASTM D 4285 : Standard test method for indicating oil or water in air

Test panel:
A test panel with size of (200 x 200 x 6) mm. This panel to be execution of PQT
for qualifying all painting procedure. This test panel has been approved by owner
representative prior to its selection as well as witnessed during execution of PQT.
Ambient condition:
No blast cleaning shall be done if relative humidity is over than 85% and when
steel temperature is less than 30 C above the dew point.
Blast cleaning:
Blasting abrasives shall be dry and free form contaminants. Size of abrasives
particles for blast cleaning shall be capable to produce surface profile height
(anchor pattern profile) of (30-75) µ
This surface profile shall be measured in accordance with ISO 8503. The
maximum impurities on the blasted steel surface as using ISO 8502-6 and
distilled + soluble water shall not exceed 50 mg/m2. Surface cleanliness to be
achieved grade Sa-2 ½ Very Thorough Blast Cleaning where dust, oils, greases
and all other contaminants should be removed up to pure white metal.

Steel preparation:
Steel preparation means is condition of steel prior to do blasting should be fulfill
criteria as follow:
All edges shall be rounded at minimum 2 mm plates as row materials
are exceptional.
Free from oil and mud and other contaminants,
All welding seams should be free from:
o Spatters if any spatters found then should be removed by
grinding machines or other tools can be employed,
o Welding smokes all welding smokes should be removed by
fresh water and detergent then again flush with fresh water.

Blasting:
o Pre blasting job should be done by visual check or test on steel
surface prior to do blast cleaning such as no oil, grease, and other
contaminant.
o Preparation on steel prior to do blasting as mention on steel
preparation fulfilled steel preparation completed done.

Surabaya is standard Sa-2½ where ISO-8501-1 is reference to be
applied.
o Sa-2½ means is: Very thorough blast cleaning, when viewed
without magnification the surface must be free visible oil, grease
and dirt and from mill scale, rust, paint coatings and foreign matter.
Any remaining traces of contamination shall show only as slight
stains in form of spots or stripes.
Power tooling:
Power tooling means is surface preparation by using power tool such as
grinding machines, non woven disc machine, disc sander machine, Etc.
Standard cleanness by using power tool shall be achieved to St-3.
Employed of power tools cleaning shall be approval of three parties
(Owner, Shipyard and Jotun coating advisor).
Painting system:
Painting system means is application of product accordance to
specified system propose by Jotun Sales.
