1.General :
General painting job on the vessel in new building is effort in preventing
premature failure due to corrosion on steel surfaces during fabrication, erection,
completed coating and conduct tests accordance to ISO and ASTM procedures
refer to specification of Jotun.

2,Standard and rules:


ASTM E-337 : Standard test for measuring Humidity with Psychrometer.

ISO-8501-1 : Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and re-


lated product.
Visual assessment of surface cleanliness, part 1:
Rust grade and preparation Grades of un-coated steel surface

Test panel:
A test panel with size of (200 x 200 x 6) mm. This panel to be execution of PQT
for qualifying all painting procedure. This test panel has been approved by owner
representative prior to its selection as well as witnessed during execution of PQT.

Ambient condition:
No blast cleaning shall be done if relative humidity is over than 85% and when
steel temperature is less than 30 C above the dew point.

Pre blast preparation:
The surface shall be free from any foreign matter such as weld flux, residue, oils,
greases, and salt Etc. prior to blast cleaning. All surfaces should be washed with
clean fresh water prior to blast cleaning.
Any oil and grease contamination shall be removed in accordance with SSPC vol-
2 grade SP-1 prior blast operations.

Blast cleaning:
Blasting abrasives shall be dry and free form contaminants. Size of abrasives
particles for blast cleaning shall be capable to produce surface profile height
(anchor pattern profile) of (30-75) µ
This surface profile shall be measured in accordance with ISO 8503. The
maximum impurities on the blasted steel surface as using ISO 8502-6 and
distilled + soluble water shall not exceed 50 mg/m2. Surface cleanliness to be
achieved grade Sa-2 ½ Very Thorough Blast Cleaning where dust, oils, greases
and all other contaminants should be removed up to pure white metal.

Steel preparation:
Steel preparation means is condition of steel prior to do blasting should be fulfill
criteria as follow:
 All edges shall be rounded at minimum 2 mm  plates as row materials
are exceptional.
 Free from oil and mud and other contaminants,
 All welding seams should be free from:
o Spatters  if any spatters found then should be removed by
grinding machines or other tools can be employed,
o Welding smokes  all welding smokes should be removed by
fresh water and detergent then again flush with fresh water.

Surface preparation:
Surface preparation means is condition of substrate after blasting, power tooling
or other surface preparation methods recommended by Jotun prior to do any
application of primer coat on the steel substrate. The surface preparation is to be
applied on all steel surfaces of vessel internal and external parts  Cargo tank,
slop tank, spill tray tank, hull, super structures, Etc.

Blasting:
o Pre blasting job should be done by visual check or test on steel
surface prior to do blast cleaning such as no oil, grease, and other
contaminant.
o Preparation on steel prior to do blasting as mention on steel
preparation fulfilled steel preparation completed done.
o Blast cleaning on Pertamina tankers build in Dock Perkapalan
Surabaya is standard Sa-2½ where ISO-8501-1 is reference to be
applied.
o Sa-2½ means is: Very thorough blast cleaning, when viewed
without magnification the surface must be free visible oil, grease
and dirt and from mill scale, rust, paint coatings and foreign matter.
Any remaining traces of contamination shall show only as slight
stains in form of spots or stripes.

Power tooling:
 Power tooling means is surface preparation by using power tool such as
grinding machines, non woven disc machine, disc sander machine, Etc.
 Standard cleanness by using power tool shall be achieved to St-3.
 Employed of power tools cleaning shall be approval of three parties
(Owner, Shipyard and Jotun coating advisor).

Sequence of coating on Panel / Sub Block of Water Ballast Tank:
1. Inspection of steel preparation  Owner, Jotun advisor and an be
Shipyard marked on un-satisfied areas.
2. Correction on marked areas.
3. Check and acceptance of repair by three parties.
4. Fresh water washing to removed dust, dirt, salt content, oil, grease and all
other contaminant.
5. Masking on areas not to be blasted with suitable materials.
6. Blast cleaning achieved to Sa-2½ on to entire surface.
7. Clean up the surface to be painted  vacuum cleaner can be employed.
8. Inspection for blast cleaning  three parties (Shipyard, Owner and Jotun’s
advisor).
9. Check condition of weather and environment condition.
10. Paint application 1st full Coat (Balloxy HB Light Beige), started from
topside to bottom side or depend on situation.
11. Let primer coat thorough dry.
12. Paint application 1st stripe coat (Balloxy HB Light Green) with brush and
touch up on holiday areas (if any).
13. Inspection on 1st stripe coat areas by three parties. Touch up on un-
satisfied areas can be done if necessary.
14. Paint application 2nd stripe coat (Balloxy HB Light Beige) with brush and
touch up on holiday areas (if any).
15. Inspection on 2nd stripe coat areas and check the surface area cleanliness
(without dust, black mark & others contaminant) prior paint application 2nd
full coat by three parties.
16. Check condition of weather and environment condition.
17. Paint application final coat (Balloxy HB Light Green), started from topside
to bottom side or depend on situation.
18. Let primer coat thorough dry.
19. Touch up on holiday areas (if any).

20. DFT check by three parties  Build up paint shall be done in case DFT
still less than minimum DFT requirement.
21. Rule NDFT 90/10 (Nominal Dry Film Thickness) shall be applied in
painting application.
22. Check the job from sagging, cracking, dry spray etc, shall be repaired.

Activities related to ballast tank coating after erection.


1. Fresh water washing to remove welding smokes on welding areas.
2. Let surface dry.
3. Power tools St-3 on erection joint and burnt mark areas.
4. Inspect the cleanliness surface by three parties.
5. Check condition of weather and environment condition.
6. Paint application 1st touch-up coat Balloxy HB Light Beige by spray on
erection joint and burnt mark areas.
7. Let 1st touch up coat thorough dry.
8. Paint application 1st stripe coat Balloxy HB Light Green by brush on
welding seam’s of joint block.
9. Let 1st stripe coat thorough dry
10. Paint application 2nd stripe coat Balloxy HB Light Beige by brush on
welding seam’s of joint block.
11. Let 2nd stripe coat thorough dry
12. Inspection on stripe coat and cleanliness on welding seam’s of joint block
areas by three parties. Touch up on un-satisfied areas can be done if
necessary.
13. Check condition of weather and environment condition.
14. Paint application final touch-up coat Balloxy HB Green by spray on
erection joint and burnt mark areas.
15. Final NDFT 90/10 check by three parties  Build up paint shall be done in
case DFT still less than minimum DFT requirement.
16. Check the job from sagging, cracking, dry spray etc, shall be repaired.

Painting application:
 Painting application means is apply products of Jotun accordance to
specification and Jotun’s manufacture procedure.

Painting system:
 Painting system means is application of product accordance to
specified system propose by Jotun Sales.
