CALCULATION:
Horizontal angle:

 Face left = 165° 1’ 15”

 Face right = 160° 45’ 10”

Vertical angle:

 Face left = 53° 20’ 15”

 Face right = 50° 0’ 5”

PROCEDURE:
 This method is most commonly used by a surveyor for the determination of
primary standards knowing the latitude of the place and the determination
of the sun, the astronomical triangle can be observed for azimuth.
 The declination of sun changes rapidly therefore exact knowledge of the
time observation is very essential. The correction for refraction and parallax
are to be applied. Since the sun is very near to the earth than the other star.
 The instrument is set on the point and adjustments are done very accurately.
The instrument is turned to the sun and is adjusted in such a way that the
sun is in the first quadrant of the cross hair system. The time of observation
is noted down accurately. The horizontal angle and the vertical angle are
measured accurately.
 Using the tangential screw bring the sun to third quadrant as quickly as
possible. Again measure the horizontal and vertical angle. The chronometer
time is also observed. Similarly the procedure is repeated with the face
changed and the readings noted.
 During the above observations the sun changes its position considerably
and accurate results cannot be obtained by averaging the measured altitude
and time. However the time taken between the first two readings is small
and therefore the average is taken. Similarly the average is taken for the
two readings. Now the two values of azimuth obtained are averaged to get
final value.
 For precise work the altitude correction should be provided for inclination
of the horizontal axis. The reduction is performed in the same manner as for
the corresponding star observation. The corrected value of sun declination
can be computed by knowing the time of observation. The corrected value
of sun declination can be computed by knowing the time of observation.
 Thus the azimuth of the given point can be determined.
RESULT:
The Azimuth of the sun = 281° 55’ 32.6” E.
