Introduction

Changes incorporated into SRM 2014 version

To simplify the motor design process, the user can select, from a drop-down list, the desired
maximum chamber pressure for the motor. This differs from the original version of SRM
whereby the user specified the initial Kn of the motor. The choice of propellants has been
expanded to include KNSB "coarse", which is offered in addition to KNSB "fine". The two
KNSB variants are differentiated by the oxidizer particle size. Two other propellants have
been added: KNER and KNMN. KNER is erythritol based and KNMN is mannitol based
sugar propellant. A "Nozzle Design" worksheet has been added to assist the user in visualizing
the nozzle geometry.

This spreadsheet was created in order to predict the performance of a Solid Rocket
Motor (SRM). Although there are many factors which make a precise prediction
of actual performance difficult, it was felt that a reasonably close approximation
to expected performance would be attainable, and be very useful for design purposes.

The two most significant factors that will affect the actual (delivered) performance
compared to predicted are propellant preparation and nozzle construction. Propellant
preparation affects the burn rate characteristics and combustion efficiency. Care must
be taken to have propellant constituents well-blended and of consistent oxidizer particle
size (see "Conditions for Applicability", Burnrate worksheet). Good nozzle performance
can be achieved with use of proper geometry and enhanced through careful contouring
and polishing of flow surfaces.

A key factor that leads to inaccuracy in prediction is that the analysis assumes that
ignition of the propellant occurs on all surfaces immediately and simultaneously. As
well, burnout of the propellant is assumed to occur instantaneously. In reality, burning
would normally initiate on those surfaces directly exposed to the ignition flame only,
and as the chamber pressure rises, ignition occurs then on the remaining exposed
propellant surfaces. The net affect is that the actual pressure rise and tail-off occur
less rapidly than predicted, resulting in a more "rounded" shape to the pressure/time
curve and a longer overall burn time.

In particular, erosive burning is difficult to model. This spreadsheet uses a simple

erosive burning model, intended more for contemplative purpose than actual prediction.
Erosive burning may generally be neglected in the design of a new motor without serious
consequence.

Pressure and performance predictions are based upon standard thermodynamic

and fluid flow equations, in conjunction with empirically obtained parameters that
relate propellant burn rate to pressure. These parameters (a,n) are provided for
five "sugar" propellants: KNDX, KNSB, KNSU, KNER and KNMN. These burn rate
parameters were obtained through careful strand burner measurements conducted
by Richard Nakka (KNSB "fine", KNDX & KNSU) and Magnus Gudnasen (KNSB
"coarse", KNER "coarse" & KNMN "coarse"). Fine and coarse refer to the oxidizer
particle size.

This spreadsheet is dedicated to the design of rocket motors that use "sugar"
propellants. Sugar propellants generate a large amount of condensed-phase
combustion products. The resulting "two-phase flow" has a significant effect upon
motor performance and cannot be ignored. This spreadsheet accounts for two-
phase flow by using suitably modified parameters and flow equations.

Note that this spreadsheet is solely intended for hollow-cylindrical propellant grains
(including BATES). Any number of segments may be specified. The user can also
specify which surfaces are to be inhibited from burning (if any).

To provide guidance in use of this spreadsheet, and to clarify various terms,

"pop up" text boxes will appear over cells with a red corner flag. These may be
disabled, if desired, via the Tools/Options/View/Comments menu.

Note on chamber pressure calculation:

Due to the algorithm that is utilized to compute chamber pressure, the maximum
chamber pressure may differ from the user-selected TARGET maximum chamber
pressure by +/- 0.3 MPa (50 psi).
