Project Idea:

1. Accommodation for garments workers by government: Garment industry is the

lifeline of Bangladesh economy. It created opportunity for many unskilled women to
employment which was nearly impossible before. It thus facilitated the goal of the
government: women empowerment. These women are now financially independent and
can make important decisions about her life and her family. Despite all these positive
benefits these workers are bring into the development bucket of Bangladesh, the
government have hardly been able to provide accommodation for these women coming
from all over the country to a metropolitan city that has severe accommodation problem
and whose accommodation is beyond the means of these workers. As a result, these
workers live in slums and other unhygienic and insecure places. Being women makes it
even worse—they face sexual harassments in places where they live.

So what can government do about it? The government can provide accommodation and
secure place at a reasonable expense for these women. It will make women secure and their
rights ensured. Moreover, garments industry in which most of the workers are women will
earn positive image from those who are sensitive about workers’ rights.
