GOLDEN JANISSARY STYLE

Warriors across Creation use Golden Janissary Style to combat creatures of darkness. When shades grow
unruly and when the dead march, students of this art array themselves against the Underworld. Should
the Yozi Cecelyne taste the sandy shores of the South and spew forth her demon children, the Golden
Janissaries are ready. Several schools in each direction dedicate themselves to the ancient style, and
each school has a master who demands equal devotion to the martial lifestyle. As shadowlands bloom in
all lands without discrimination, the master instructors of Golden Janissary Style now recruit
aggressively. They reduce their students’ access to the outside world, the better to focus their minds nd
accelerate their training. Walks through the shadowlands and dreamstones of trips to Malfeas sensitize
warriors to the presence and the methods of their many enemies. They study the construction and
weaknesses of many undead monstrosities and similarly learn the natures and bans of myriad
demonspawn. The Golden Janissary schools combine such study with an unrelenting practice of martial
forms, maneuvers and tactics that make them formidable obstacles for the enemies of Creation. But so
few Dragon-Bloods out in the Threshold choose the Golden Janissary training… This style has even fewer
adherents in regions where the Immaculate Order has a powerful grip. Monastic warriors of
the Order often resent the intrusion of a secular school in the war against fell creatures. Where the
Order has little infl uence, martial artists of this style work with the Immaculates or, more likely, confl ict
with them. Such confl icts rarely end well for the secular warriors, since their style concentrates on
fighting the unnatural instead of Creation’s proper denizens.Some Golden Janissary attacks also
manifest a golden fi re the Immaculates fi nd… suspicious. Fire-aspected Dragon-Blooded, as well as
Water Aspects, can wield the Charms of this style without paying a mote surcharge.
Weapons and Armor: Golden Janissary Style treats spears and dire lances as form weapons. The style
can be used while wearing light armor or no armor.

CLEANSING FLAME STRIKE

When a warrior knows she strikes her blow for honor and the advancement of Creation, no abomination
can withstand her cutting blows. Any unarmed attack supplemented by this Charm automatically infl icts
lethal damage. Against creatures of darkness, it also adds +2L to the raw damage. (See Exalted, p. 192,
for more information about “Creatures of Darkness.”)

ROTTEN LEAF ARRESTED

No foe foreign to Creation can stand before the might of a Golden Janissary. Blows supplemented by this
Charm clearly have the martial artist’s full strength behind them. The player of any creature of darkness
struck with this attack must roll to prevent that creature’s knockdown. If the attack infl icts enough raw
damage to cause knockdown normally, the roll’s diffi culty increases by two. Against any target, the
attack need only inflict a number of levels of damage equal to the target’s (Stamina – 1) to make the
creature risk becoming stunned. The diffi culty to resist being stunned is equal to either the attacker’s
Essence or (the damage inflicted – the target’s Stamina)—whichever is higher.

Leaf Arrested
Defenders of Creation must have some method for discerning who is and who is not a foe. After all, the
techniques of a Golden Janissary have little effect against creatures born in the light. Their training gives
them the knowledge necessary to sense the fl ow of Essence through a body and know whether that
creature belongs in Creation. Once activated, this Charm allows the martial artist to detect at a touch
whether or not her special combat skills will affect a given target (i.e., whether a target is a creature
of darkness). Merely touching a creature is enough to make a judgment, though an attack of some kind
is necessary when the target tries not to be touched (almost always during battle). Against creatures
using appropriate supernatural deception, the character adds her Essence in dice to the (Perception +
Investigation) roll to oppose that effect. The martial artist must touch the target with an unarmed strike
(not a weapon—even a form weapon) in order to use this Charm.

A martial artist who practices the Golden Janissary Style moves with billowing, sweeping cuts and blows
like a spreading blaze, always toward the fuel of his enemy. Although his attacks look somewhat wild,
his actions are actually executed with enviable precision and skill, making him no easier to evade.
For the Charm’s duration, the janissary’s player treats rolls of 10 on a damage die as two damage
successes against creatures of darkness. Additionally, the warrior can spend one mote refl exively in
Step 7 of attack resolution to reduce the damage from any attack against him by two dice, to a
minimum of one. Using this technique against creatures of darkness reduces the damage by fi ve dice
instead, to a minimum damage of zero.
