Maximum edge distance, Shear strength of high-strength bolts, Bearing strength at
bolt holes, Bolt strength in slip-critical connections, Gross and Net areas, Tensile
strength.
2 Welded connections : Types of welding : fillet weld, Groove weld and plug or 6 2
slot weld, Minimum size of weld, Maximum size of weld, Minimum length of
weld, Maximum length of weld, End returns, Shear strength on the base metal.
3 Tension members: Tensile strength, Slenderness limitations, Effective area, Block 9 3
shear, Build-up members.
4 Compression members: Euler Elastic Buckling, Effective length (KL) and 9 3
effective length factor (K), Types of buckling in compression members (Local
buckling and overall buckling), Flexural Buckling of steel columns, Compressive
Resistance, Limiting Slenderness Ratio, Design of compression members.
5 Beams: Bending Stress and the Plastic Moment, Stability (web and flange local 9 3
buckling), Lateral-torsional buckling, Nominal Bending Strength, Bending
Strength of Noncompact Shapes, Shear resistance, Deflection.
