Focus: Phonemic Awareness
K.3 The student will orally identify, segment, and blend various
phonemes to develop phonological and phonemic awareness.
e) Identify words according to shared beginning and/or ending
sounds.
The objective of this lesson is to introduce and identify phonemic
awareness. The purpose is to provide the experience of listening to
and matching initial sounds in words and to perceive sounds and
initial phenomes. This well help students to begin associating sounds
and words. The teacher will introduce phenomes, “To tell whether a
word is the same or different at the beginning, we can say the word
slowly and separate the beginning sound from the rest of the word.”
The teacher will read “Many Marvelous Monsters” to introduce
phonemes through alliteration. After reading the book to the class,
the teacher will choose three words with matching phenomes from
the story and ask the class to mimic the beginning sound of the
words. The teacher will say other words and ask the class to identify
the beginning sound of the words. The students will be able to use
the Promethean Board to sort pictures according to their beginning

activity. This is a picture sort activity. The teacher will select students
to approach the board. The student will click and drag pictures from
behind the treasure chest and place them under the column with a
matching beginning sound. Next, groups of students will use the
following slides to sort pictures as the class assists. Next, the teacher
will provide a picture sort worksheet for students to complete. This
will be used to assess the efficiency of the lesson.
