Problem 4.

21
A rectangular beam has a width of 280mm
and an overall depth of 490 mm. Concrete
cover is 65mm from the centroid of bars.
Concrete compressive strength f’c=24 MPa.
Steel yield strength are 415 MPa for
longitudinal bars and 275 MPa for hoops.
Determine the shear strength provided by
concrete using the simplified calculation (a) if
the beam is subjected to shear and flexure
only, and (b) if the beam is subjected to axial
compressive force of 124 kN.
Problem 4.22
Determine the minimum cross section
required for a rectangular beam from a shear
standpoint so that no web reinforcement is
required by the Code if Vu=132kN and
f’c=23.5 MPa. Assume d=1.9b.
Problem 4.23
A rectangular beam has a width of 300mm
and effective depth of 510mm. The beam is
provided with 10mm vertical U-stirrups with
yield strength fy=275 MPa. Concrete strength
f’c=27 MPa. Design a stirrups for the following
factored shear a) 40kN b) 80kN c)160 kN
d)250kN e.k,) 320 kN.
Problem 4.24
A rectangular beam has a bw=270mm and
d=460mm. The beam is subjected to service
dead load shear of 102kN and live load shear
of 114 kN at critical section. Use f’c=20.7 MPa
and fy=275 MPa. Determine the required
spacing of 10mm vertical U-stirrups.
Problem 4.25
Determine the spacing of vertical stirrups near the left support of the beam loaded as shown in the
figure. Given the following data:
bw=290 mm f’c=24MPa Pd=80kN wD=20kN/m
d= 560 mm fyt=275 MPa PL=110 kN wL=28kN/m
