The growing global socio-political requirements for solutions concerning water supply and
environmental investments in the water sector have increased the demand for well-qualified and
internationally oriented engineers. WAREM is particularly suited to satisfy and answer these
demands by covering the following main areas:
The program profits from the University of Stuttgart‘s excellent research facilities in the water
sector, such as the worldwide largest in-situ groundwater remediation installation (VEGAS),
Europe’s largest prototype research waste water treatment plant (LFKW), and a laboratory hall
for physical modeling in Hydraulic Engineering. The program includes many excursions
throughout Europe to visit hydropower stations, locks, sewage treatment plants and water
supply system. Qualified, multidisciplinary engineers and scientists as well as international scientific and professional
cooperation in the field of water resources engineering and management are in demand to meet the water needs of a
growing world population within given environmental and social constraints.
The Master of Science Program WAREM has been developed to satisfy these demands. It is based mainly on the fields of
civil and environmental engineering, and working close together with the Institutes IWS (Hydraulic and Computation
Environmental Systems) and ISWA (Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management).
Current global trends such as population and economic growth as well as climate
change exert increasing pressure on water resources worldwide. These ressources are
the basis for food production, urban and industrial water supplies and hydropower.
Experts are needed who understand that multiple problems of water resources
management can only be addressed through a holistic approach.
The profile of the Master's program is application-oriented. The aim is, besides providing the
participants with an overview on the water sector in general, to educate experts in the field of
Integrated Water Resources Management. This requires a diversification of their knowledge and
leads to the capability of cross-linked thinking. The answer to complex environmental and water
related problems requires economic and managerial competencies more than classical
technical knowledge.
The consolidation of different disciplines has not only a methodological dimension but a cultural
and a human one, because interdisciplinary team work requires knowledge sharing and
effective communication.

Language of instruction
English
Start of the program
First semester starts in Cologne each winter term (September).
Content
The studies cover a period of four semesters. The first and second semester take place in Cologne, the third
semester can be used for study exchange or can be studied in Cologne. The fourth semester is dedicated to the
master thesis. The program consists of basic modules, like “Management of Natural Resources Systems”,
“Natural Resources Economics and Governance”, ”International Cooperation and Development” and “Project and
Business Management” with the aim of providing an overview on water management, economics, project
management and the regional and institutional context. In addition, the participants select ten specialized
electives related to topics of water management emphasising the particular situation. The fourth semester will
focus on the preparation of the master thesis. Internships and research stays, if possible together with a local
institution or company, guarantee the practical orientation of the master research. Tutors pay particular
attention that the knowledge acquired in the first three semesters is applied in the individual projects.
Field visits
Field visits play an important role as the exposure to real projects and to relevant institutions is of highest
importance in order to meet the objectives of the master program.
Projects
In the modules “Project I – III” students will have the chance to apply the new knowledge received in the basic or
specialized modules to an interdisciplinary case study. The participants should come from diverse technical or
managerial backgrounds. The team projects should be related to real projects visited during the field trips or to
projects suggested through other partners of the network.
Program Structure
The master program starts in the winter term of each academic year. It consists of modules, which are usually
block-structured. The program is equivalent to 120 ECTS, (one ECTS equals around 30 hours of workload)
according to the European
system.
The first, second and third semester consist of core and elective modules, the fourth semester is dedicated to
master thesis:
Core Modules
Acknowledging the fact that participants have a wide range of professional backgrounds, core modules aim at
providing the student with a general overview of different disciplines relevant to water resources. The IWRM
program follows the principle of sustainable development, which can only be achieved in consideration of ethical
and social aspects. Therefore, such aspects play a fundamental role during the studies. In various courses
students are encouraged to think and reflect critically.
Elective Modules
The elective modules are organized into “Methods and Tools” and three thematic blocks: “Integrated Water
Resources Management IWRM”, “Natural Resources Management and Development NRM”, “Renewable Energy
Management REM”. Students select a total of ten elective modules from the respective module catalogue IWRM
(minimum 25 ECTS), the module catalogue methods and tools (minimum of 10 ECTS), and a maximum of 15
ECTS modules from the any module catalogue, including the catalogues of the adjoining master programs (NRM
and REM). Such multiple opportunities of elective courses choices are beneficial for the interdisciplinary nature of
the student body. Every student is supported in his way of specializing during the master program. Since
resources management includes numerous cross-cutting issues, free choice of electives from the adjoining
module catalogues related to energy and land is highly important.
Thesis
The fourth semester is dedicated to the master thesis research which is addressing a present research or
management problem. The thesis can be carried out in an African, Asian or Latin American country relevant to
the student’s specialization, possibly a local institution or company guarantee the practical orientation of the
master research. Here students demonstrate their ability to analyse a problem as well as design, execute and
document the related research. Hence, the student applies the knowledge and competencies acquired in the
previous semesters and demonstrates the ability to plan and execute a project systematically and independently.
