Senior Recital Proposal

Kavyesh Kaviraj

Description
This proposal is a description of the planning and execution of my senior recital, to be held on the 27th of
November 2018, at 7:00 pm, at the Columbia College Chicago Music Department’s Concert Hall.

Theme
The theme of my recital is “Duality”, wherein I will showcase my musical heritage in two different
worlds, the jazz setting and the contemporary songwriting world. My programme duration will be around
1 hour of music approximately. I plan to use the progression of the show to gradually perpetuate the arc of
the show: the show will begin with a solo piano piece, then a duet with alto saxophone, expanding to trio
and quartet settings, and consequently ending with full ensemble.

Instrumentation
I will use the following instruments in my ensemble(s): Piano, Electronic Keyboard, Electric Guitar,
Electric Bass, Acoustic Bass, Drum Set, Tenor and Alto Saxophones, Trumpet and Voices. I have already
recruited a group of my favourite musicians to fill these positions.

Learning Outcomes
Planning: I believe that as bandleader, it is my responsibility to have arrangements as clear as
possible, and lead rehearsals effectively and adequately, thereby alleviating unnecessary responsibilities
to other performing musicians. I will plan and coordinate rehearsals, arrange and direct musical decisions,
and design and print promotion material.

Rehearsal: I am aware that my ensemble is rather large and I understand that having accommodating
rehearsals with respect to the convenience of all members included is difficult; therefore I plan to split
rehearsal in shifts, to coordinate the schedules of participants better. In light of this, I will be arranging
charts, lead sheets and demos so as to be clear and concise with my arrangements and compositions- this
will reduce the need for tenuous multiple rehearsals, and make learning and remembering the music
relatively easy. I believe that from the organization of this recital, I will be able to learn how to coordinate
rehearsals better, keep rehearsal time down, and communicate and keep track of schedules.

Production: I will learn how to produce a visually appeasing setting in spite of having a large
ensemble. I will learn to coordinate the entrances and exits of members in preparation of having hybrid
combinations of ensemble configurations. I will learn to adequately communicate and improve stage
presentation, by being certain of the information I present.

Budgeting: I will learn to plan and allocate funds for appropriate production needs, such as hiring
musicians, photography and videography, multimedia and promotion needs etc. I will understand the
needs and expenses required for not only myself, but to be mindful of individual musicians requirements
as well. I find it important for me to understand the importance of portioning and weightaging costs,
keeping the interest of the performance in mind.

Composing/Arranging: I will learn how to further my skills as a composer and arranger, and
working with a wide variety of settings in this very recital will help me recognize and provide the varying
needs of each ensemble. I will learn to communicate my musical ideas through clear sheet music and
demos, yet leave room for individual musicians to bring to the table their individual musicality.

Promotion: I will learn to integrate the theme of my recital in my promotion material. In an attempt to
keep the audience curious and attentive, I will use visual themes in my poster, program and social media
posts. I will learn to create event invites, places of interest for media, and draw attention to my vision of
the theme.
