Student: Janice Marmol Professor: Rickey Moroney

Course: EDU 5230 Date: 12/6/18

Grade: Kindergarten Topic: Comparing numbers 1-20 Content Area: Math/ELA

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES (s)

After viewing a video on comparing numbers 1-20 and participating in a class discussion about

the three signs used to compare numbers, students will identify whether the number of objects in

one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group by using

counting and matching strategies. After the review on signs, the students will complete a

SMART notebook activity on their iPad with at least a three out of four accuracy.

NYS-CCLS / +NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

NEW YORK STATE MATHEMATICS STANDARDS

CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4

Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.

Indicator: This will be evident when students are able to complete comparing number

worksheets via the SMART Board.

CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.6

1
Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than (more than), less than (fewer

than), or equal to (the same as) the number of objects in another group.

Indicator: This will be evident when students are able to recognize which one group is

greater than, less than or equal to.

ISTE STANDARDS

1. Empowered Learner

C. Use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to

demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Indicator: This will be evident when students effectively use their iPads during a SMART

notebook activity.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS STANDARD

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.1

With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

Indicator: This will be evident when students engage in a class discussion on

comparing numbers 1-20.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES

 iPads

 SMART Notebook

 SMART Boards

 Worksheets

 Prezi

 Kahoot

 Stylist

2
 Pencils/Pens/Markers

 Youtube Video

MOTIVATION

Students will watch a YouTube video about comparing number 1-20, in which students will

stand up and open their arms in the same direction as the alligator to determine which

number/object is greater than, less than or equal to.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES

1. The students will watch a video “Comparing Numbers - Greater Than Less Than”.

Students will stand up and move their arms like an alligators mouth to show the

appropriate symbol. (Who wants to watch a video?, Who knows how to compare

numbers?, What are the symbols used to compare numbers?, What are the key words for

comparing numbers?)

2. Students will begin by counting different objects around the classroom. Object groups

could include sets of crayons, pencils, books, etc. The students will be able to compare by

greater than, less than or equal to. (What is this number?, What is the other number?,

Which number is greater/more, less/fewer, or same/equal to?)

3. Students will then break into group and discuss if they are able to identify if two groups

have more than (or fewer than, or the same amount) the other. The teacher will go around

and listen in to each group for accuracy in students counting. (optional formative

assessment)

4. After the group discussion/ activity, the teacher will review the key symbols and

vocabulary used while comparing numbers as a whole class. Students will be given

3
worksheet and will have a chance to come up to the SMART Board to complete a

question. (Which number is greater?, What symbol do we use? What’s a good way to

remember the symbols?)

5. After the SMART Board activity, students will play a SMART Notebook activity on their

iPads to review comparing numbers 1-20. (Do you know what a SMART Notebook

Activity is?, Do you have the application opened on your iPad?, Does anyone have any

questions about the activity before we begin?, Is everyone ready to start?

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

Group Discussion

Indicator: This will be evident when students engage in the group discussion they are

able to identify if two groups have more than (or fewer than, or the same amount) the

other.

Direct Instruction

Indicator: This will be evident when the teacher leads the review about the key symbols

and vocabulary used while comparing numbers.

Cooperative Learning

Indicator: This will be evident when the students go around the room to collect objects

that can be compared and then form small groups to discuss.

ADAPTATIONS

 The student who is an English language learner will be provided with content specific

vocabulary words prior to the lesson uploaded to their iPads.

4
 The students with fine motor skills impairment will use the iPad and stylist, instead of

paper and pencil to complete the worksheets.

 The student who has trouble working in groups will obtain their own checklist to

complete.

 The students who is hiring impaired will be seated towards the front of the classroom.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION

The teacher realizes that not all students will learn the same way, parts of the lesson will be

customized to fit their needs. Students will be separated by preference.

Kinesthetic learners:

The kinesthetic learners will be able to move around the classroom while collecting objects for

the small group discussion.

Visual learners:

The visual learners will be provided with a power point including bright images and definitions

included during the lesson.

Auditory learners:

The auditory learners will be able to listen the comparing video and class discussion.

ASSESSMENT

Informal

The teacher will observe students during object collection and group discussions for accuracy in

students counting. .

5
Formal

The students will complete a SMART notebook activity on their iPad with at least a three out of

four accuracy.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Following the lesson on comparing numbers 1-20, for homework students will be asked to

complete a Kahoot activity. The Kahoot will be reviewed and graded by the teacher,

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Direct Teacher Intervention:

For those students who did not meet the lesson objectives the teacher and students will work

together on matching the word and symbols needed for comparing numbers.

Academic Enrichment:

For those students who met the lesson objectives, they will be given the materials needed to

create their own SMART Notebook activity on their iPads.
