OFFICIAL RULES 2010-2011

Spelling Bee Centenario

2010
This is an oral competition. There is no practice
round.

1. After the pronouncer gives the contestant a word, the contestant will be encouraged
to pronounce the word.
2. The contestant may request the pronouncer to pronounce the word again. No other
information about the definition, etymology, or history of a word will be given, except
for the Spanish translation.
3. Having started to spell a word, a contestant may stop and start over just one time.
Letters or their sequence may be changed in the respelling. The contestant has a
maximum of two minutes to spell the assigned word.
4. Spelling Bees will be conducted in rounds of increasing difficulty. Each contestant
remaining in the Bee at the start of the round shall spell one word in the round,
except as provided in rule 8.
5. Upon missing the spelling of a word, a contestant immediately drops out of the
contest, except as provided in rule 7 and 8. The next word on the pronouncer's list is
given to the next contestant.
6. If none of the contestants remaining in the Bee at the start of a round spells a word
correctly during the round, all shall remain in the competition.
7. When the number of spellers is reduced to two, the elimination procedure changes.
At that point, when one speller misspells a word, the other speller shall be given an
opportunity to spell that same word. If the same speller spells that word correctly,
plus the next word on the list, then the second speller shall be declared the
champion.
8. If one of the last two spellers misspells a word and the other speller, after correcting
the error, misspells the new word, then the misspelled new word shall be referred to
the other speller. If this other speller then succeeds in correcting the error and spells
the next word, then he or she shall be declared the champion.
9. An oral appeal relating to the Spelling Bee must be made to the head judge before
the contestant affected would have received his/her next word had he/she stayed in
the contest.
10. The judges' decision shall be final on all questions. A tape recording may be replayed
as needed by the judges.
