Overview of Periodic Table Groups

Dimitri Mendeleev was the first to notice relationships between elements and arrange them in the periodic table based on properties. Later it was discovered that periodicity was associated with atomic structure rather than atomic mass. The periodic table is arranged into columns called groups that contain elements with similar properties. It also has rows called periods. The atomic number indicates the number of protons in an element's nucleus. The atomic mass is the total number of protons and neutrons. Metals are generally found on the left side of the periodic table, nonmetals on the right, and metalloids touch the zigzag line separating them. Groups are classified based on common valence electrons, with Group 1 being the alkali
