HVG-1
4 Reagent Preparation and 5ample Pretreatment

4,2 Sample Pretreatment

r Elementsfor measurement are restricted to samples in inorganic form. Organic form
and organic matter samples must be decomposed through wet ashing in advance.
. When measuring As, Se, and Sb, sensitivity differs depending on valences. When
measuring these elements, perform preliminary reduction treatment so that valences
match.

t Hint Methods such as the following are available for preliminary reduction treatment of As, Se,
and Sb. (These methods are only examples. Perform suitable preliminary reduction treatment
according to the condition of the sample and purpose of analysis.)

Examples of Preliminary Reduction Treatment

Add 2 mL of hydrochloric acid (35 to 37o/o) and 1.25 mL of 2oo/o

potassium iodide solution for 25 mL of standard solution or unknown
sample and let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes.
Add 20 mL of hydrochloric acid (1+'l) for 25 mL of standard solution or
unknown sample and heat for about 10 minutes at 90 to 100 "C.
Add 5 mL of hydrochloric acid (35 to 37o/o) and 3 mL of thiourea solution
Sb
(0.1 mol/l) for 25 mL of standard solution or unknown sample.

I Horr Potassium iodide will interfere with Se and Hg. Perform sufficient cleaning when
analyzing these elements using flow paths through which potassium iodide has
passed.
lf the effects ofpotassium iodide are significant even after cleaning, we
recommend preparing another set of parts that include the various tubes,
manifold, gas/liquid separator, fluorinated rubber tube, and quartz absorption
cell, and replacing all of these parts before use.

7 Similarly, gradually turn the adjuster screw on the reagent side until solution
begins to be drawn smoothly through the two reagent suction tubes and then
tighten further by about half a turn.

Do NOT overtighten the adjuster screw. This may significantly shorten

the service life of the tubes.

I Run in the pump for about 10 minutes until the pumping rate has stabilized.

$ Xint When using new tubes, solution may not be drawn even with the adjuster
screw fully tightened. ln this case, do not forcibly tighten the screw. Run in
the pump for about 10 minutes with the screw tightened halfway and then
set the screw position again.

3:: Set the speed control knob to a suitable

speed.
The sensitivity may be affected by the suction rate of sample and reagents. Normally use
a sample suction rate of 3 to 5 mUmin.
Generally, while a higher suction rate increases sensitivity, it also increases the noise level,
which deteriorates reproducibility. We recommend setting the suction rate to a previously
determined value that ensures both appropriate sensitivity and good reproducibility.

Set the lamp current, wavelength, slit, and other parameters as specified in the

with Sb.
ln this case, insert the suction tube into the blank solution and press the FLUSH switdt

! Hore The pump tube suction rate gradually decreases with operation time.
Measure the suction rate with a measuring cylinder on a timely basis. When the
suction rate has reduced to about 8Oo/o of the initial rate, replace the pump
tubes.

-'i nint We recommend thinly coating the pump tubes with silicon grease.
This can extend the service life of the tubes.

HVG-1
7 Maintenance and lnspection

7.2 Absorption Cell Maintenance

The absorption cell is made of transparent quartz glass and may rapidly deteriorate
depending on handling. Clean it after every use with distilled water.

olnshuction
Wait at least 30 minutes after extinguishing the flame before performing
maintenance on the absorption cell.
You could sustain burns.

o
lnsiruction
Do NOT directly touch the absorption cell with bare hands. Do NOT use the
absorption cell if it is dusty.
Adhered alkali metals, such as natrium and kalium, and other impurities will
accelerate devitrification and shorten the service life of the absorption cell.

o
lnstruction
Do NOT use activators or soap when cleaning the absorption cell. Do NOT let
these substances adhere to the absorption cell.

o
lnstruclion
Do NOT heat an absorption cell that is wet.

! nore Deterioration of the absorption cell cannot be avoided even by cleaning the cell
everyday.
As deterioration progresses, the surface of the absorption cell undergoes
activation and sensitivity decreases significantly. ln this case, soak the absorption
cell in about a 25o/o nitric acid solution for more than 30 minutes and then clean
it completely with distilled water.

7,3 Gas/Liquid Separator Maintenance

Clean the gas/liquid separator completely after every measurement with distilled water.

! Hore lf soiling is heavy, sensitivity will decrease and noise will increase. ln this case,
soak the gas/liquid separatorin about a 25o/o nitric acid solution for more than
30 minutes and then clean it completely with distilled water.

! Hore lf the mounting screw on the cylinder is close to breaking, forcibly connecting
the pressure regulator will break the screw on the pressure regulator. ln this
case, replace the cylinder.

Observe the following cautions when handling gas cylinders.
. Gas cylinders should be sited outdoors at a location where there is a good
passage of air and no exposure to direct sunlight, and the gas should be fed
indoors through tubing.
. Take care that gas cylinders become no hotter than 40 "C and do NOT allow
any flame within 2 meters of the gas cylinders.
. When using high pressure gas, make sure that there is sufficient ventilation.
At the start of work inspection, check for gas leakage with soapy water or
by other means.
. Secure gas cylindersin a vertical position so that they cannot drop or fall
over. Always keep liquefied gas cylinders (argon gas, etc.) in a vertical
position and do NOT allow them to fall to a horizontal position.
. Be sure to use oil-free pressure reducing valves. Also use ones that have no
oil adhering to the inside of the pipes, etc., where high-pressure gas comes
into contact.
. Use approved pressure regulators and connectors. For details, contact your
Shimadzu representative.
. When installing the pressure regulator to a cylinder, be sure to wipe the dust
off the outlet of the cylinder. This dust could cause gas leakage.

lnstall exhaust equipment with a hood above the burner compartment of the atomic
absorption spectrophotometer.
For details on exhaust equipment, refer to the manual of the atomic
absorption spectrophotometer main unit.

Be sureto provide a duct made of metal for the expulsion of high temperature
gas above the atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
A duct made of plastic will burn due to the heat of the flame.
