This document provides operating procedures for burner air register adjustment and flame shape adjustment for units 5&6 at the Jorf Lasfar power plant. The burner air register controls combustion air swirl using inner and outer vanes. Adjusting the vanes changes the flame shape from wide and short with more swirl to small and long with less swirl. The initial settings for the air register and tertiary air damper are specified. The procedures describe adjusting the flame shape to prevent issues like curl back flame and flame impingement on surfaces, which could damage plant components. Diagrams are provided to illustrate typical abnormal flame conditions.

Flame shape can be optimized by the adjustment of outer or inner air register vanes, tertiary air damper. By adjusting the position of outer and inner vanes, the IHI Dual Flow (DF) air register controls the swirl force of combustion air exactly. The air register is modulated to close, the combustion air swirls more strong. This results the flame in getting wide and short. In the contrary, the air register is opened, the less swirl creates small and long flame. This allows the burner to be adaptive to a variety of fuels with different ignition properties, and to different burner settings.

(a) Initial setting
Initial setting shall be carried out as follows. Air Register Outer Vane Adjustment of air register is by manual or remote operation.
Air Register Inner Vane
The inner vane is driven manually and once settled in a suitable position to give good flame appearance at boiler full load condition remains in that position
Tertiary Air Damper
The initial setting of the tertiary air damper shall be fully opened, and shall be adjusted as necessary to prevent pulverized coal or fly ash from accumulation in. If the curl-backing flame into coal burner inner sleeve is observed, this condition can be corrected by the open of this tertiary air damper gradually. In this time, combustion condition shall be checked from the inspection hole.
(b) Flame shape adjustment
All flame shape adjustment will be carried out during boiler operation if required to prevent the following combustion condition. Curl back Flame If a large flame curl back condition is left for long period of time, damage would occur, especially, around burner tip, as a result of extreme high temperature
Flame impingement to the burner throat and/or furnace wall
This condition may be produce damage to the throat area and is apt to accelerate slagging or coking on the furnace wall around burner.
Flame ignition point movement
Stable ignition point of the flame is desired for the safe operation of the burner. If ignition point moves away from the burner throat, the greater the possibility of tripping the burners will be made. The use of ignitor oil burner support may be required until proper flame shape is re-established when long moving of ignition point is made.
