Culture Documents
This form will outline LE’s mission, the staff members you will be working with, and our volunteer expectations. The
purpose of this document is to give detailed information to our hosts and to collect information about our hosts, as well.
• Fostering Creativity
Our programs provide an opportunity for students to express their creativity in a dynamic learning environment.
Volunteers create, plan and execute their own curriculum and lesson plans and have essentially complete
freedom in running their classrooms. Learning happens through creative problem solving and improvisation, for
both the teacher and the students, instead of through rote memorization common to foreign language classes.
• Expanding Horizons
English has become the primary language for business and travel throughout much of the world, and having a
well-educated population with proficiency in multiple languages strengthens a country's economy, opens new
markets and solidifies its position as a truly international player on a global stage.
• Promoting Understanding
Everyday technology makes our world a little smaller. Cross-cultural encounters are daily occurrences, and
with them comes the risk of misunderstanding. Our volunteers and hosts live together, eat together, and learn
to acknowledge - as well as respect - their differences and commonalities. The mutually respectful and
interested relationship between our volunteers and our host communities reinforces the enrichment and
harmony in diversity.
• Spreading the Spirit of Volunteerism
Our volunteers give their time, experience and enthusiasm to a community desiring their skills. Host
communities welcome volunteers into their homes, and give them the invaluable opportunity to authentically
and thoroughly experience a new culture. All parties involved give to promote Learning Enterprises and the
multiculturalism and reciprocity it stands for.
• Providing Rewarding Work Experience
At Learning Enterprises, young adults have the opportunity to take on significant responsibilities that positively
impact the lives of people around the world. Volunteers are not only teachers, but leaders in their host
communities. They develop skills such as leadership, adaptability, and resourcefulness.
PDs will prepare their team for what to expect in-country in terms of culture, location, teaching conditions, class size,
students’ English abilities, etc. PDs will also train your volunteer in the basics of ESL teaching according to general skill level of
students.
PAGE 2
During the program, PDs will coordinate in-country logistics, such as travel to and from airports, travel within country,
arrival times and housing for orientation, travel to host villages, assignment of host families, etc. They will remain in Romania
and reachable for duration of the program and check in on volunteers regularly to address any concerns.
Additionally, PDs may visit schools and host families to provide volunteers with feedback on their performance and any
recommendations for improvements. They will be available and ready to handle any minor or major emergencies in-country and
ensure the safety of all volunteers.
The CCs will also be reachable for duration of the program and check in on volunteers and hosts regularly to address
any concerns. They will be available and ready to handle any minor or major emergencies in-country and ensure the safety of all
volunteers.
To ensure that all volunteers are comfortable teaching and living abroad, we host a mandatory training day for all
volunteers. In addition to the organization-wide training day, each Program Director will hold a minimum of three teaching
modules, covering topics such as classroom management and lesson planning. All volunteers will be provided resources on
lesson topics, as well as games and songs to use in the classroom.
Finally, Program Directors and Country Coordinators will prepare country and cultural information to inform volunteers
on Romania’s language, history and common cultural practices. Volunteers may not know a lot about Romania or your language
before participating in the program, but they will be enthusiastic to learn from you and your community!
LE programs range from 4 to 7 weeks long, depending on the program (please, refer to page 10 for information about
your program). Every program will involve an orientation for volunteers, a mid-point break and a closing ceremony. During these
points, volunteers will stay together, outside of their hosts’ homes. During the rest of the program, volunteers will be expected to
stay with hosts.
Volunteers will not be permitted to spend more than one night away from hosts on any independent trips, unless pre-
approved by both the Country Coordinator and Program Director and excluding the orientation, mid-point break and closing
ceremony.
For programs under 5 weeks long, volunteers will not be permitted to spend any weekends away from hosts, unless
pre-approved by host, Country Coordinator and Program Director.
While the volunteers are in host communities, they will be teaching, interacting with community members and hosts,
and completing volunteer service projects.
PAGE 3
Expectations for Teaching
Volunteers will be expected to teach for 3 to 5 hours a day, but should not teach for more than 5 hours in a day.
Volunteers will also be prepared to work with all abilities and age groups.
In the classroom, volunteers will use a mixture of games, songs and conversational interaction to create a fun and
supportive learning environment for students. Volunteers will not be teaching directly from text books or giving traditional-style
exams. By supplementing students’ text-book based English classes outside of LE, LE hopes to inspire a passion for language
learning and cross-cultural communication through a camp-like experience.
In addition to teaching English classes, every volunteer is required to complete a volunteer service project. This
community service is designed to further integrate volunteers into your community.
Examples of service projects, include office hours for individual practice at a local café or meeting place, singing and
drums, mini lessons or gatherings, and community gardens or picnics.
Volunteers will be required to document their service projects, during the program. If you are interested in helping
volunteers with their community projects or would like to be involved, please, let your volunteer, Country Coordinator or Program
Director know.
Volunteers will be required to communicate regularly, and at least once a week, with the program staff.
Additionally, volunteers will be required to communicate regularly with their hosts and to discuss schedules and plans.
Some programs will require volunteers to have cellphones in-country, while others will only provide volunteers with the
opportunity to purchase cellphones or phone cards during their orientation. Please, speak with your Program Director or Country
Coordinator to find out if your volunteer will have a cellphone.
• Volunteers will be expected to take full responsibility for their actions, and conduct themselves in a professional and
courteous manner. Use your judgment about what is appropriate and listen to feedback from the community.
• Volunteers will be expected to treat their hosts with utmost respect. Host families and communities open their doors
and genuinely desire to interact and bond with volunteers. Therefore, volunteers must not disrespect hosts by
using their free time to leave the community or isolate themselves after class. Volunteers will inform host families
of all plans and individual travel.
• Volunteers will not permitted to exchange money with any parties without the permission of the Program Director,
including but not limited to financial gifts to and from host families, tuition fees from students, or facility use fees
between students and administrators.
• Volunteers will be expected to refrain from becoming involved in any political issues in your community or host
country.
• Volunteers will be expected to learn about and participate in local customs. They will do their best to ensure that
their actions are not offensive or affronting to their hosts.
• Learning Enterprises is a secular organization that embraces and respects people of all religions. Volunteers will
be expected to not impose or encourage their religious beliefs among the other volunteers or the community in
which they are teaching.
• Volunteers will be expected to not engage in any behavior that is illegal under U.S. or host country law. Any
conduct that involves illicit drug use, lewd and unlawful sexual behavior, violence directed at other members of the
organization, or that puts another volunteer or student in danger will result in a termination of the volunteer’s
relationship with Learning Enterprises.

• A kreativitás táplálása
Programjaink lehetőséget nyújtanak a diákoknak kreativitásuk dinamikus tanulási környezetben történő
A tanulás kreatív
A mindennapos technológia világunkat kicsit kisebbé teszi. A kultúrák közötti találkozások minden nap
osztályméret, a diákok angol képességek stb. szempontjából.
nyelv tanításának alapjaira igazodva a tanulók általános képzettségi szintjéhez.
PAGE 5
utazást, a házigazdákhoz való utazást, a befogadó családokhoz való kiutazást, stb.
töltik idejüket, a házigazdáktól függetlenül.
PAGE 6
Elvárások a tanítással kapcsolatban
Példák a szolgáltatási projektekre: egyéni gyakorlások a helyi közösségi helyeken/tereken, kávézókban, közös éneklés,
