Terms of Reference

English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher

AGENCY DESCRIPTION:

Treating people with dignity, respect and safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of the
most vulnerable are key principles to working with LWC.

LWC is a Catholic Lay Ecclesial Community that works mainly with refugees, asylum-seekers,
and vulnerable migrants from many countries and of various regions, including from Colombia,
Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia, Bangladesh, Syria, Nigeria, Sudan and many
more.

Due to an increasing number of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, and a corresponding
need for language education in communities across the country, our team is seeking to increase
its capacity to deliver ESL classes, particularly for adults.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A total of ten (10) positions are open to persons who are or can quickly become familiar with
good practices in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for refugees and
displaced persons. The ESL Teachers will work closely with the Host Community Liaison Officer
and help community stakeholders to support implementation of agreed on strategies and plans
for ESL programming.

Candidates must be available for a five week fully funded part-time university training course in
TESOL, to commence in October. Following this, the ESL Teachers will be primarily responsible
for implementing ESL classes in Community Resource Centres until the end of February 2019.
The ESL Teachers should be available to teach classes in one or more of the following
communities: Port of Spain, Arima, Chaguanas and Rio Claro. The position is part-time and ESL
classes will be scheduled on evenings and weekends to accommodate students who work
during the day.

Some specific tasks are given below:

● Complete part-time TESOL training course including theoretical and practical


components

● Produce educational content

● Design and develop ESL curricula


● Plan lessons in advance

● Deliver lessons in Community Resource Centres and/or other locations

● Perform administrative tasks including tracking attendance records and student feedback

● Design and correct in-class assessments

● Ongoing professional development including online courses, workshops and peer


observation

● Participate in programme meetings and community events as needed

● Ensure adherence to referral pathways for psychosocial support as needed

● Liaise with Licensor and ensure that classroom is maintained in good order

● Ensure that teaching strategies and methods comply with the educational needs and
abilities of learners

● Organise and supervise recreational activities to promote physical, mental and social
development and social cohesion

● Provide extra assistance to students with special needs, such as those with physical and
mental disabilities

● Comply fully with the LWC policies and procedures, safety policies and procedures, core
values and code of conduct

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

➢ Bachelor's Degree preferred

➢ Certification in English language ability preferred

REQUIREMENTS:

➢ Excellent English language ability in speaking, listening, reading and writing (C1 level or

➢ Prior exposure to people of diverse cultures/lived, studied, volunteered or worked abroad

➢ Native level proficiency in Spanish or other foreign language

REPORTS TO​: Host Community Liaison Officer

SCHEDULE: ​Part-time position, minimum 6 hours per week, flexible as needed.

Required to work between Education Hub based in Maraval and assigned Community Resource
Centre, which may be in Port of Spain, Arima, Chaguanas or Rio Claro. Every attempt will be
made to assign persons to the centre closest to where they reside.
