it will be critical that we work with the community to define
our vision for the next 5-10 years and beyond. While there are
many unknowns, it’s important that we look ahead and
anticipate what the future will bring.
Because of the passage of the City’s revenue measures, the City
will be able to avoid some of the cuts to services that would have
been required had the measures not passed. Because of the
passage of amendments to the City Charter, the City will be
able to operate even more efficiently than it has in the past.
I am excited to work with the new Council, and look forward
to 2019.

Fabulous Fireplaces—How to Update Your Fireplace
A fireplace is the heart of the home, representing warmth,
comfort, and security. ough not as essential as they used to
be—we don’t use them as a primary source for heating anymore,
for example—fireplaces are still a focal point. No matter how
lovely a room’s decor, a sooty, outdated fireplace detracts from
the overall design. With that in mind, here are some clever ways
to update your fireplace.
1. Change the surround. e immediate wall area around the
firebox is called a surround. Many brick fireplaces have a layer
of soot and discoloration built up on their surrounds from years
of use. Cleaning can be challenging because the usual methods
(power washing or sand blasting) are not suitable for indoors.
For this reason, it’s often easier to cover the discoloration with a
coat of paint or a layer of cladding. If you opt to paint, choose a
color similar to the walls if you’d prefer for your fireplace to blend
into the surroundings, or select a contrast color if you want to
make it the main focal point. Cladding is the application of one
material over another, which is a popular fireplace look. Consider
cladding the surround with materials such as ceramic stone or
metal tile. For a more contemporary look, a floor-to-ceiling stone
or tile slab is a sleek choice, creating a uniform column that will
