Max. Marks- 20 Time 2:00 hrs.

Q1:- Derive the expression for general 3D conduction equation in cartesian co-
ordinate system.

Q2:- What is thermal resistance. Derive the expression of thermal conduction

resistance for hollow sphere.

Q3:- A sphere of 2 c.m outside dia maintained at a uniform temperature Ti = 225

℃ is exposed to an ambient air at T∞ = 25 ℃ with a convection heat transfer co-
efficient h= 10 W/m2C. Calculate the critical thickness of insulation
(K=0.08W/m-C) required to maximize the rate of heat loss. Also calculate %
increase in heat transfer.

Q4:- A wall of a house is made of 10 c.m thick brick (K=0.75 W/m- C) &
plastered with 4 c.m thick plaster (K=0.5 W/m-C). Find out the thickness of rock
wool insulation (K=0.065 W/m-C) to reduce the heat loss through the wall by
75%.

Q5:- A steel ball of 5c.m dia initially at temperature of 450 ℃ is suddenly placed
in an environment at 100 ℃. Heat transfer co-efficient between the steel ball and
fluid is 10 W/m2C. For steel C=0.46 kj/kg-k , ρ= 7800kg/m3 K=35 W/m-k.
calculate the time required for the ball to reach a temperature of 150 ℃.

Q6:- Define efficiency and effectiveness of fins and derive relation between
them.

Q7:- A fluid of low electrical conductivity at 26 ℃ is heated by a 12 mm thick

iron plate. The heat is generated uniformly in the plate at a rate of 5×10 6 W/m3
by passing electrical current through it. Determine the heat transfer co-efficient
to maintain the temperature of the plate below 200 ℃. Take K= 20 W/m-k.
